Your concern is proper. Healthy maples will recover from this.

Look up proper pruning cuts and make sure your tree is taken care of well. It is a potentially large tree which you don't want rotting out.

FWIW, I like pruning in late fall or early spring. Its easier for me to see the structure.

Different days I have different theories on when is easiest on the tree. When do maples set their buds for next year?

May be best to prune at ground level :-) Sounds like it was planted way too close to the house - there should be NO branch interference - and Norway maples are considered an invasive species across much of the country.

I'd seriously consider removal and replacement with something better suited for that location.

Toronado... It's good that the tree will recover and not be bald on one side. From what I have read you can prune in any season, is this not true? I was hoping to get the branches away from the house.

Gardengal, I am aware it's an invasive species, even here in Kitchener, Ontario. The long term plan may be to remove the tree. It would be nice to have some grass under it. That is not in the short term plans/budget, right now I am more looking to manage it and see if I can make it work. Although, I don't want it to become a bigger expense and go through a window!
