I agree this looks like a renovation project just keep going and NO do not paint the rubber.

You won't drywall over it, but perhaps there will be doorframe trim that will hide it?

I would contact Nanawall and see if they have colored gaskets that you can replace them with. I know on our windows and doors the glazing beads are easily removed and replaced in order to ease install (even though they appear and feel permanent). Perhaps, they have something similar for this gasket, which can then be ordered to the color of your door, eliminating the contrast. Not sure it's possible but it's worth a phone call.

@emmarene - Nanawall was nice enough to reach out and talk to me. They spoke to our installer and we discussed shortening the screen receptor on the left to cover the two vertical pieces of wood and then drywall/molding could cover the two vertical parts. This will look fine on the inside, however from the outside there would be a 4 inch vertical overhang from the screen receptor/molding. If someone walked into it, I'd imagine the screen receptor could bend or the molding would snap.

@bellburgmaggie - The doors will look fine open, it's when it's closed that is the problem. Unless we do the above, which in that case the inside will look fine, but from the exterior, it'll look a bit odd with the overhang.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting @Sophie Wheeler - This is what the door would look like with the drywall and molding. The two vertical pieces of wood would still be there. Do you think that looks good? I can't imagine anyone would like this. It looks like a mistake:

just think that this particular line of their product (wood doors)
wasn't asthetically perfected like other brands. The rep told us if we had ordered another line (not wood) we would not have these vertical parts. I wish we knew that, because then we would have not gone with wood. Or maybe if we ordered a main working door with three folding parts it might not have had these two vertical parts... which look unfinished and tacky.

This has been really frustrating because this cost us over 15K (door and screen). I think it should have been clear that the door would look like this as we didn't see examples like this in the showroom. All the bifold doors on their website that show a closed door don't show these extra pieces of wood. Photos from other companies that carry bifold doors also don't show this. Perhaps if they had white gaskets it would pass better..but they only carry black.

It is perfectly fine. You don't even have the wall finished, much less the furnishings and accessories. One the room is finished and detailed, you will never ever notice that. It's glaring at you now because it is a bare unfinished room. And you're obsessing over a tiny tiny detail that in a finished room is 1% of that finished room. It's like 30% if the room now, because there is no room. There is a construction site.

I found an example of the 2 vertical lines on their website. It's in the Sunset Popular Idea House 2006.

But I'm with the others, once your place is finished, and you are using these doors, I think you'll learn to love them and forget about this detail. I think it's just a by-product of this type of door.
