Two plants ,one stem

I bought a plant the name of which i have forgotten. The pot actually contain 2 bushes and I thought these must be 2 bushes in one pot but when took out the bushes from the pot. I found out they had a single thick hard wood like root. It was little surprising. Did someone grafted one bush on the other and it occurred

naturally. I don't think it can occur naturally. Note all other pots at the store had only one of these, none of the pots had both of these bushes. thanks

The plant is Pieris japonica 'Little Heath' and it is a very dwarfed variegated form. However, the plant is inclined to some reversion - that is the slightly larger, solid green growth that is showing. So yes, all the same plant and it is quite natural :-)

Some variegated plants do this very frequently - Euonymus japonicus 'Aureo-marginatus' or 'Ovatus Aureus' is well-known for reverting to solid green portions, as is Acer platanoides 'Drummondii'. The green growth is stronger growing than the variegated growth and if not removed, will eventually overtake the entire plant. It should be remove if you want to preserve the variegated form.
