Definite candidate, hoosier. If the plant is significantly stunted compared to others planted out at the same time, then I'd say it's pretty likely. And it looks from the photo that there is definitely a point at which the foliage started to get dramatically stunted and distorted. Septoria doesn't cause that dramatic stunting.

Agree with gorbelly. Would be nice to have a macro look at the center leaf in the close-up to see if the geometric pattern on the leaves fits. Is there chlorosis and/or stripes on the stem anywhere. Can't tell the way the sunlight is hitting it.

Yeah, I really wish Houzz would allow for higher-resolution photos. What they allow isn't enough to do plant diagnosis.

Nothing on the stems that I have seen. It does look like stunting somewhat on the affected stems. It starts as the spots and then the leaves turn purplish brown and are crispy. They do not wilt. It is almost a bar pattern across the leaf.

I think the wilt refers more to the growing tips and just a little to the leaves. "Purplish brown" fits bronzing. These seem especially good illustrations to compare, sure you've already checked though. Before the complete necrosis blacking everything out, did you see any of the ring pattern? Says symptoms are pretty variable.

Here's a good photo from Purdue Univ's TSWV page. If you look at the bottommost affected leaf, you'll see that the "bronzing" that looks like burn or nutrient deficiency has areas with a "leopard spot" or tiny rings/ripples appearance. IMO, that's what distinguishes the virus from other causes of similar-looking leaf discoloration.

Well, so far no new cases. I sprayed copper a week or so ago and daconil a few days ago and spinosad for thrips. I have one plant with a strange wilt but no spots and am keeping an eye on it. Thanks for the help, hope that is the end of it.
