Changing Sprinkler head layout

I have a zone in my yard that is somewhat shaped like a cone, wider at one end and narrower at the other. There is one straight line of 5 rotary sprinklers that cover this area. At the narrow end the area is triple covered and the rotary sprinkler only does a 1/4 turn. This area is a bit over watered. It is the end of the line on this zone. In the area between sprinklers #1-#3 however, this area is under watered and doesn't have good overlapping coverage from other zones. My question is whether I can remove and cap off the last sprinkler in the line and then shift #2 towards #1 and insert a new head between #2 and #3? Essentially taking the line between #1 and #3 which is cut in half by #2 and break it up into thirds so there are 2 sprinkler heads in between that area. Since the total number of sprinkler heads in that zone hasn't changed, it won't change the water output or the pressure, but it would result in that area getting around 50-75% more water than before. Would this work? Or am I crazy? The area around the current #4 is perfectly watered because it has good coverage from other zones, it is just that #5 is over watered and the spray area of #2 is underwatered.

    What kind of sprinkler heads are you using? Rainbird rotors have adjustable nozzles that are quite inexpensive. perhaps you should just change the nozzle to a lower output.

    What I would do is first verify that the layout is properly designed. Rainbird will send you a layout design for free. It will take a bit of work on your part to confirm your water output and other specs but then you'll be sure that your design it proper....

    but essentially, you can do whatever you want. You can pull out a head and cap it, move them around, etc. But it just might be a good idea to get a design from a professional.

    local installers might charge or even give a free design but I've had bad luck with installers in my area.

    it was installed by a professional company last year when the home was built. I just didn't notice the problem until it got really hot this year and places started drying out. I do plan on having someone come out and look at it

    also, if possible try to have a couple different companies come out to look at it. they may have conflicting answers that you can pick from.

    I will take a picture of my layout when I get home. the zone isnt actually cone shaped in reality but in practice it works that way. I tried to simplify it to make it more understandable.

    so here is a rough mock-up of my yard and sprinklers. The coverage areas aren't exact, I just traced a milk cap for the circles, but you can get the general idea.
    I pointed out the wet area. It currently has three sprinklers which cover a pretty small area. and they are all rainbird 5000 rotors. Two of them are from the zone in the front yard and only do a half circle. The third (which is the one I want to eliminate and I used a light blue colored pencil to circle that one) only does an 1/8th circle so it puts out a lot of water into the small area.
    I also labeled the dry area. As you can see there isn't very good overlap from other areas and the spacing is pretty large. I inserted an extra sprinkler head in that area using the light blue colored pencil again. I used a dark blue pen to Mark the current sprinkler heads.

    So my drawings of the arcs are probably not true to scale. The zone that is in question has 5 heads in the line. The radius of the nozzle is about 25'. They are all Rainbird 5000 series. Distance from sprinkler #1 to #2 is about 21'. Distance from #2 to #3 however is just over 30', as well as being nearly 30' away from the sprinkler heads along the back edge of the property. The area that #2 and #3 cover is also sloped so some of the water is lost to runoff. #3 is about 25' from #4 but is in a flat area and has decent coverage from the two other nearby zones. The last sprinkler head in that zone is also right at 25' away from #4, but is in a flat area and is only about 10' from an R-Van Rainbird rotary sprinkler head as well as only about 15' away from another rainbird 5000 (which only has a half arc so it puts down twice as much water over the same amount of time.) That area is also between my house and my neighbor and ends up getting shade most of the day. Because of the R-Van rotary and the 5000 series being so close to that last sprinkler, that area ends up being over watered.

    My biggest question is whether it would work to cap off that #5 sprinkler head and add a new sprinkler head in between the current #2 and #3? I am just trying to figure out the best/easiest solution.

    Jeremy, the best thing I would tell you is to call an irrigation contractor to look at your system in person. There are many different nozzles for the RB 5000 series. Nozzle changes could solve some of your coverage issues, but changing nozzles means that lateral line sizes would need to be known. I think having a contractor look at your situation would actually be the "best/easiest" before adding another head and eliminating #5 head. Depending where you live, find a Rain Bird distributor and asked them for recommendations of KNOWLEDGEABLE irrigation contractors. If you have questions, let me know.
