I've never seen one like that before but my guess would be an Anthurium. Doubt it would be a Philodendron. I'll see if I can find out something more definite.

Nearest seems to be Anthurium pittieri. There are some varieties of pittieri but I don't know which one would be closest to it. That said, while checking your photos I couldn't see a geniculum ("knee") on the petioles, which on is all Anthuriums. Still don't think it's Philodendron though because there's no sign of cataphylls which are typical of the genus. Any chance you can find out where they got it from?

Thanks for the help, TB. You have a good guess. I thought maybe it looked similar to Anthurium jenmanii or perhaps Anthurium bonplandii. Or maybe an A. hookeri? There is a good page on the Exotic Rainforest site with lots of info about identification confusion:

I'll try to see if I can find out from where it came.

PS. I think "Japanese fern" was due to a mistaken identification as a Japanese bird's nest fern... which I'm pretty sure it is not.

Thanks for the research, tropicbreezent. Over on the Florida forum, I asked another user named Eric who works at Leu Gardens and is very good at identifying plants. He confirmed anthurium, as well. That may be the closest we get unless joining the International Aroid Society, LOL. :)

I joined the IAS years ago but I could never get an answer out of them for anything in the way of IDs. I think the organisation is pretty close to dead. And an aroid specialist I knew took off to Columbia on an agricultural project and I lost contact. Steve Lucas from Exotic Rainforest was very good for finding out aroid IDs but unfortunately he passed away a number of years ago. Hopefully Eric can come up with something.

That might be the answer to why their web site is so dead, they might have all moved to FB. I'm not on it so not up with all these things.
