Lots of questions! First fig tree...

Hi everyone, I inherited this tree when we purchased our home last summer. I know nothing about it. We are in South Texas and had a one or two day freeze over the winter; it died back and is taking off and producing now, but I don't know what might be breba or if they are only maIn crop or what! I picked two off- no smell and bland flavor, these may be not quite ripe but I just wanted to get some info :)

1. Any idea what kind? More or less anyways :)

2. Are some of these breba figs? Looks like some is on old growth and a lot are new growth...not sure if you can have both at the same time! The ones I picked were off what looks to be old growth. Flavor was bland and the fruit had no smell when split open...

3. There are lots of shoots coming up at the base...should I cut these back at some point? Not too sure about fig tree pruning!

A lot of people cut back there trees so fruit is easy to get to. Cant pick fruit that's 20 feet up vary easy, suckers most would cut off, some would root and sell/trade to others wanting fig trees. Nice looking tree I hope mine to look like yours. GL.

Yes, I believe you can have breba and main crop figs at the same time.

As for the suckers, it really depends on what shape tree you want. I myself do not mind a bushier tree because I want to keep mine somewhat short, no more than 8' so that I can more easily harvest the figs. This winter, when growth has stopped (they really do not go dormant in SD), I'll trim off unwanted suckers. I do not mind a bush, but I do not want a thicket!

Try allowing them to ripen longer before picking. You might be picking too soon. I had a Hardy Chicago fig produce for the first time last year. I waited until the figs swelled, drooped over and changed color yet they didn't taste good. I was very disappointed at first. Then I decided that once they looked visibly ripe I would give them a few more days before picking them. The figs tasted way better when I did this.

Thanks everyone for the info...yes I am sure I picked them too early- now the birds keep getting them before they ripen, so maybe at some point I will get to try one!
