Are the pods long and good size? Are the seed large? I have never heard of Kentucky Red Cowpea but I used to have some Red Ripper Cowpeas. They were a large healthy more of a bush type vine with large long shells.

As I recall, the pods are about 8-9" long and somewhat flattened. They are more solid in their construction than a lot of other cowpeas. The vines like to spread across the ground. But when they find support, they do climb.

Sandhill Preservation Center received their start from me.

This evening, I'll try to remember to take a picture of the seed and post it here. It's a very nice pea.

It's been about 30 years since I grew the Red Rippers so my memory is probably grown fuzzy and I am wrong about the growth habits. I shouldn't have butted in.

Oh Auther, you aren't butting in. Your input is always appreciated! I just haven't grown any of the Red Rippers, in order to confirm or deny your suggestion.

George, that looks like the seed you sent me a few years ago. I don't remember the name, but I was impressed with the size and how they just kept growing with almost no cate or water. I not grown another pea or bean as hardy as these.

Larry, those look exactly like ours and we know they are Kentucky Red. We got them from George several years ago and have grown them since. I love the flavor better than any other cowpea I've grown--admitedly not many.
