The retaining wall was to control the hillside more than stabilize the deck, which was already there. The wall was far enough away that it didn't matter in this case. A garden path was built on top which allowed for flatter access around the property. The lower wall extended the into the hillside and was turned into a garden bed. A water fall was eventually built to the right of the wall and was actually incorporated into the wall itself.
