You could lighten it up with whites, natural wood floors and light area rug. Mid century modern had a lot of white walls, mirrors, natural wood paneling and geometric wallpaper. The furniture was allowed to take center stage.

If that's the space, it appears to be quite a good size. As far as the closet doors, you could add a narrow molding to them to dress them up a bit. I would stick with light and airy with minimal accents. There are so many great pieces of reproduction midcentury furniture if you don't have access to some original pieces. A chair in the corner with a lamp for reading and a small table would be a good idea. What colors do you lean toward? How tall are the ceilings?

If you want MCM, then you want light and airy. Go for white, black, orange, blue, red, grey, and geometric patterns. You can do white sheets and a white comforter. Gold or brass can also be a good idea to add with lamps and accessories.
