I like Bev's rug as well, but with all due respect for another's opinion I'm not fond of the shapes and squares being all so different geometric patterns and with red. Trying to minimize and harmonize IMO.

Porter, that's what I thought originally but everyone had such great ideas so here is what I will do. I will find a blk and white rug and try it out and also the brown and white rug and when I have pics I will post.

It is not by any means against any Houzz posters at all... I just feel with the red you love that black and white or off white would work best with red which you seem to love. I know we all differ and that's the beauty of Houzz. I think we all respect one another and you do what you think it best for your home. We aren't essentially so to speak in a debate... just passionate in our thoughts :)

To make things even more difficult - lol - given wall, drapes and pillow colors (other than the red), I think I would continue in that direction. Bring in patterns and textures for a warm and personal look. The scrolls and artwork perhaps can be moved. Add a patterned rug that has a more youthful/interesting feel. I really like the picture below, as room feels warm and modern. When you can, I would add a floor lamp on the left and a table/more substantial lamp on the right...mixing has a more dynamic feel. I would re-accessorize the radiator cover and fireplace mantle, so the room has a common thread. You have to consider the room as a whole vs adding one item at a time..have a plan and create an idea book until you are sure of how you want the room to look - that is how a designer tackles a room...mood boards, etc. and they also bring in options and test them out. You're getting lots of different opinions, so there are lots of ways you could head and I'm sure you are confused. Hit and miss until you get it perfect. Good luck and have fun.

I live in Canada and Home Sense would carry a lot of these things. In the US, I believe Marshalls carries similar inventory. You could also try Overstock or Wayfair and check to see if you can return things free of charge, as their prices and on line shopping is pretty easy. Try your local stores as well and wait for sales! Make it a journey and you don't have to buy all at once. All the best.

@mocreidl - if referring to picture I posted, it's probably custom, but to tell you the truth it could be an interesting diy job. The different fabrics could be sewn together by a seamstress if provided with the measurements and upholstering or adding as a slip cover is not very difficult.

prncss. it is confusing here. you do not need to go to magazines. you can go almost anywhere on the internet see a picture you like and click on save to ideabook and it lets you pick the right one. I have seen a lot of discussion about blk and white. did you want blk and white? ok, i found you were going to find one. and a brown and white? did not see that rug.

If you find one inspiration pic it will help a lot. we can give you much more with red. felt like you want to try something else?

havingfun, I just wanted rug ideas and I think when everyone started talking abt the rest of the room, I lost focus. I was on houzz looking for inspiration but had a pile of magazines so thought I would look through those as well. I will find an inspiration pic and post maybe that will help me know what direction I would like to go. I really love red for personal reasons and the circles are a gift from a deceased family member and they make me happy and they are the first thi g I see when I walk onto my home.

Prncess if you love your circles then definitely keep them. If they make you happy then that makes ME happy too!! That's what this should always be about!! Nothing less, nothing more. I am sorry if my suggestion was too much, regarding your lamps. They look fine where they are

Tammy, thank you, I think I was just a little sensitive because of what the items meant to me but I'm fine with the suggestions, I can consider moving things around it doesn't mean I have to throw them away.

Trying to work around the window is a bit complicated. Maybe just get a canvas to go over it.

It's in good shape but I wanted to change something and I thought the rug would have the biggesy impact.

I say time to remove the red..with your beautiful tan leather sofa I would add shades of blue with touches of pastels and white...look at this rug and the room decor so calm...but really bringing it into the new decor direction!

Your lamps and clear lucite end tables would look great with the blues and pastels with pops of turquoise and deep coral...

The red does not complement the beautiful tan sofa..not a good combination...the lighter pastels with shades of blue will enhance the sofa color...your clear lucite tables are perfect to go in this calmer direction...pastels with pops of turquoise and deep coral...all shades of blue and white....

just trying to help with the new choices to enhance the furniture...red really is not a good choice with the tan sofa.....just trying to help the homeowner really look beyond what they already have Red...and try something different and decor design forward...:))

the nice thing with the new colors only needs a few new pillows and a piece of new art with the rug...all the other elements in the space a very nice..love the lucite tables and the lamps will work great!

The silver swirls on the wall don't bother me and with a new soft palette they will actually blend better.

Haven't read all the comments, but what about removing an end table and replace with a properly scaled floor lamp. On the other side, find a new end table and bigger lamp that compliments the floor lamp. This would visually fill the wall space better and provide balance, not just symmetry.

Hi, Prncesske Overwhelmed! My two cents - I read some of the suggestions in detail, but after that just kind of skimmed. If I am repeating others, please excuse me. First, looking at your lovely room and your "inspiration" room, I think you are clear in your vision, but really want to 'reach' a little bit more than you normally do. In that effort, you respect other's vision and opinion; many of us have a hard time with confidence at first, and once we do one or two things that are a little 'daring' we develop confidence and more assurance in our abilities. I'm excited for you, as growth in the decorating realm really spills over to other aspects of our life, and creativity just gives me a giddy feeling and makes me want to stretch more, more, more.

I also hear you about the financial concerns and understand what you clearly stated. I am always on a budget and my greatest pride comes from finding that item and saving, really saving, money. What some are able to spend and their idea of reasonable would leave my wallet reeling. When you can see that piece that you think you have to have, but there is no way you can afford it, you are better able to narrow your choices. Lastly, I don't picture you, or this room with being happy with a traditional 'bordered' rug, nor do I see you with geometric pattern preferences. I picture you with more of an all over design, maybe floral or paisley with the reds, bit of orange and tan/beige influence. Maybe a large round or (hard to find) square. I am inserting links below as to what I refer. I have found good places to look for rugs are Rugs USA, Overstock, and Ikea, although Ikea is always hit or miss due to their preference for modern and/or contemporary.

The adage buy the best you can afford should be the mantra for all, what that price point is varies with everyone. Lastly from just the bit you have shared with us I believe maybe you would be happier with just a bit less formality as it relates to placement of furniture and accessories. You have lots of touches of white, which looks fabulous with your other color choices and seeing this makes me think that any additions you make from this point forward may be to add 'just one' vs. matchy matchy. Like a single lighting source or a floor vase or coffee table statue or other item of interest. Just for examples; I think you'd like it because it would showcase your 'pair' choices as well as give your eye some more diverse items, more movement, more interest when you come into the room. Sorry to be so wordy, brevity is not my strong suit, however, I won't comment again. I'm going to follow this in hopes that you will share any changes you may make with us in the future. Good luck. Save money. Above all have fun, fun, fun - this needn't be work but a journey.

Hi guys, I can't buy anything new so I tried to work with what's in my home. I took away the circles, they didn't go far....lol. I took stuff off the window ledge above the couch. I ordered a lamp and I tried not to be over symmetrical. Keep in mind I'm working on it and I put lamps on the fireplace. Hopefully taking away stuff makes it look like there is alot less going on until I figure things out.

Princesske, that looks much better!!! Just cleaning it up a little makes a big difference. Will you move your lamps on the mantle in just a little to see how they look? It's ok if they overlap the art a bit. Great job!!! Where are your circles that mean so much? Don't want you to do without things that are sentimental to you.. that's what makes your home HOME..

prncesske...good job:) I like it! I am usually a fan of art but in this case I think it somehow takes away from that cute and charming window. Just my opinion.

prncss, all these pillows are under $5 at amazon, maybe that is all you need, take a few of these or get others and mix with yours.
