You can start a plant in a container and see how it goes. If you have a sunny window you could have flowers during the winter.

Any idea if it will or why my MG hasn't bloomed yet? Growing great foliage up my mailbox just no sign of blooms. These were started inside and transplanted in May SE Michigan zone 6b. Thanks in advance BTW can't remember which variety but I think grandpa ott

They bloom later in the higher latitudes. Do you see any buds at all? They could be hidden by the excellent foliage.

Some folks give a fertilizer with slightly higher phosphorus level to induce flowering.

I have many perennials started and they occupy significant amount of windowsill surface area. After I return from a business travel in November I will start some Ipomoea nil to get flowers in the pit of winter

The Heavenly Blue you're growing is amazing, look at all the blooms!!

The pink one is Ipomoea nil, and yours is known as a "kikyo" shaped flower, which has a pointed petals, and to my eyes they can sometimes have a diamond shape. The ones I have grown have not been very vigorous vines, as yours is showing compared to Grandpa Ott's.

My morning glory don't start to bloom until late September. Any reason for this?

It would be helpful to know what morning glory you're growing (species or name of the strain such as "Grandpa Ott's"), where you live, and when you planted the seed or seedling.

Gerris did you grow any of these on your windowsill over winter this year? Also when do you generally start your I. nil seed for outdoor planting......and do you start them inside or direct plant? I love the flower 3 frames up, the large white with sky blue striping. Awesome!! Have you grown any of the "gray" flowered ones.....I wonder how they look in person.

Thanks, Woodnative! I will start seeds a couple weeks before last frost date. Then I transplant out in early June. Almost all of the ones shown above were grown outdoors. I grew the Royal Ensign indoors. I have grown gray or dusky colored Ipomoea in the past. They're fun to see. Here is Emma Hill's Silver Star.

It will grow into a large plant but you will be rewarded with many flowers. I like to start a plant in a small container and then transfer it to a larger one once the plant begins to extend its vine..

You can of course just start out the plant in the larger pot and not transplant. I usually amend the soil by putting some fresh worm castings in the bottom of the hole before placing the seedling.

Putting good compost in the hole would be a good alternative to worm castings.
