Looks like a pumpkin or winter squash to me. Will ripen in the late summer early fall.

they usually dont color until fall ... ken

It was not a pumpkin. It was some kind of weird sqaush that did not taste very good, tasted like zucchini.

Some people like the flavor of zucchini, but I guess if you're expecting pumpkin that would be a let down.

A pumpkin wouldn't be ripe, yet ... and under ripe pumpkin would likely have a different flavor from a ripe one, possibly more like a summer squash, as you discovered in your squash, if it were young enough.

Marcus, did you sample taste it raw or cooked? Personally, I think zucchini rocks when it's cooked. On shish- kabob skewers with onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and/ or meat. I think maybe you are a little impatient. I've never grown pumpkins so I don't know what they look like halfway through. The look of it now reminds me of some of the melons found at the Mexican market.

Just as a reminder that squash that may have reverted genetically or have been severely stressed can produce high quantities of cucurbiticins which are toxic. If the squash tastes bad, don't swallow.

Jay, that's Tropical's pic & question. Here in north Carolina I grow Pumpkins. When young and green they have a similar taste to zucchini.

Sorry Marcus., guess I didn't scroll up enough. Ok, Tropical, that comment was for you. Didn't have any questions. Carry on! You know, I read that the vast majority of canned pumpkin puree, used for pumpkin pies is actually made using squash.

Well it was not making any more progress or growing for over a month, so I assumed it was a finished squash. I know the longer one waits, they get over ripe, but I only was able to eat a small amount of it, the rest of under ripe. I am still alive. LOL I did plant a package of pumpkins seeds for regular jack on lanterns, but I compost so I think some kind of squash seed came up at the same spot. I composted some squashes and all of my Halloween pumpkins last year.

I got another one from the same vine, but it turned out to be two different vines. I know because I cut it up because the pumpkin which also refused to turn orange got a very bad looking spot on it.The other pumpkin on the pumpkin forum Is there something I can do to make them turn orange faster. It looked like this one may have rotted from over water, so if I can turn them orange faster, it would help. Its so green I thought it was a water mellon at first.
