I had one of the cultivars that survived several winters at my old place, and I'm in z4. It has been several years since I lived there, but it was doing fine when I left. I placed it on a protected site, but I'd think you'd be safe in z6. I'd go with one of the known cultivars to ensure you get fragrance. I don't have a lot of experience with this plant, but seedling fragrance is hit or miss from what I was told/read.

you really should have no zone issues .. period..

and being an all green shrub.. shade shouldnt matter all that much .. but you dont state how much sun ... and you dont mention if its bright shade ...

Fragrance varies, can smell sour. Buy in bloom if possible.

but it would get a lot of sun in the afternoon.
Would that be O.K.? I found here an article about Calycanthus floridus that stated that sweetbush prefers afternoon shade.
Was that refered to Southern US climates where it is native?
My summers are much cooler- I would be in heat zone 2-3- although we can have even 98,5
°F.
