Very nice beginning you've started. Can't tell exactly how close together the dining and living spaces are, but I'd want a rug large enough to slide half way under the sofa and have both chairs sit completely on it. As for the dining room, 4' wider and longer than the table top's measurement allows from comfortable chair sit and scoot space. My personal preference would be for more color and pattern than sisal. You may find the texture of it to be a food trap at the table space, but if you are a childless neat person, maybe not. I'd go for two similar but different rugs that continue a color and style in both areas. Here's a are a few IKAT's just to inspire you.

I would also suggest a larger rug. This room is very pretty! What color paint did you use? I would suggest balancing out the white and black a bit, right now my eyes get stuck on the chairs... maybe some blue and black sofa cushions? (I know you didnt ask, hope you don't mind my commenting)

decoenthusiaste I love the Ikat rug ideas,I am having two wide cornices built for over the windows that will be covered in an Ikat print fabric. (it is on the pillow on the sofa) I love the idea of more color and pattern. Attached is a photo of a rug that I love and that looks great in the room. I was advised to use it in the dining room rather than the living room to help balance the space but it does not come in a size that will work, it is either too small or too large for the space. If I use it in the living room area I still need a rug for the dining area. If I don't use a rug under the dining room table (my husband likes this idea) then the room feels very much off balance. There is 6' between the two spaces.
sari, the upper wall color is SW 6469 Dewy, the lower wainscoting is BM white, and the ceiling is BM linen white. And I appreciate your comments! You are right, definitely need color on the sofa to pull your eye away from the chairs.

Have you checked out homedecorators.com for rugs? The one you posted is very nice; too bad about the size. Can we see a shot of the chair fabrics?

deco, the difficulty is not finding a rug, it is finding the right size. I have priced several custom options but are too pricey for my budget. My thoughts are to go with the very economical sea-grass for now and continue to search for the perfect rugs for the space when I can afford to spend more. My design dilemma is that the dining table is centered in the room and the living area is off center because of the door to the right of the sofa. If I put a rug under the table and another one under the living area that extends beyond the LR chairs there is about 6' of open floor space between the rugs. Will having two rugs in the room one centered and one off center look goofy? Blue tape in attached photos show approximate placement of rugs. The open space is the front door and there will be a runner there if that makes a difference.

Margaret, we did consider having the larger rug cut down. It is bordered on all sides and unless it were a priceless antique would not be worth the cost. :-(

Love this space and I happen to really like sisal carpets as well. The proportions of the dining area that you taped off look good to me, I would increase the width and length of the living room one. it would be nice to space the two chairs so a small table can fit between them ( similar to the way you have the chairs in the first photo, before you added the tape on floor.

The one for dining rm is great. Why do people want to cover expensive wood floors. Area rug are just that. They define areas. Put a contemporary graphic design in living rm. center between sofa & chairs. No furn on it at all except for coffee table you should see wood all around rug. So 6 x 9 would work. Also try a zebra rug would add some interest to room. Your home Is beautiful.

See pic of tape floors do not worry about every room being centered. That's why I told you to go smaller size in living area. You don't want to cover all floors not the purpose of area rugs.

Handmade rugs come in all sizes and don't necessarily break the bank. And they last and last and last... And really make a room. I am a happy customer of 1800getarug.com but there are plenty of other online vendors out there.
