IMO it really depends on the location of the mudroom in the house. If the mudroom is in a high traffic area where guests pass by it often then I would use bi-fold doors to enclose it and I would just use shelves/any other storage with no doors on the cabinets. If it's located where only you and your family see it then you don't have to. BTW is it 8' from the floor to the soffit or 8' from the floor to the ceiling? it looks to me more like 7' up to the soffit.

I like this idea. how many kids are there? is each locker going to be big enough for everyone's things? seems like the one you like is far too big for the room you have. you could maybe do 3 lockers.

It's 8' up to the sofit. It is located just inside our garage, in an awkward place leading to the dining room. Do to the build and transfers to both the dining room and living room, bi-fold doors (which I don't love) is probably our only option. That's why I'd hoped to put doors on the lockers and help to keep the area looking tidy. We are a family of 5 with 3 children. We try hard to keep most of their items in their rooms, but this would be especially nice for winter.

I like the open space for coats if we had an actually mudroom, but I'm afraid without doors it would look messy.

If this is on the way to the garage and not visible from, say, the living room, I'd leave it open. It's not a big space and if you did lockers, you'd use up a lot of space with the walls of each locker.

You should do an inventory of what you want to keep in the space to configure it.

It's not visible from the living room. It actually is a random nook between the di ing and living rooms. There is a large closet on the back side. Ideally, I would like for each of us to have a space for our daily coats, purses, shoes, hats, glives, etc. We are a blended family and so only 1 of our kiddos would need to put school items in the cubbies. The lockers don't need to be very big.

I should point out that the area is visible from our kitchen where we do spend a lot of time with guests.
