I would definitely add a stained mantel, & probably stained Craftsman-style pilasters at the ends. I love used brick but yours isn't. It's brown which is fairly dark & may give you give colors issues w/ rest of decorating. I don't know if I'd paint. More likely a schmeer so it lightens up but retains brick texture.
