Add a rug and some large artwork with blue accents. Then add coffee table and floor lamps.

Are the curtains OK or should I change them. They are a dark grey. I was also thinking of changing the color of the wall behind the sectional to a darker grey but am unsure. The room isn't big and I don't want it to look smaller or closed in.

I think if you're going for light and airy, you might want to consider lighter curtains. Also, you should widen the rod so that you can push the curtains over evenly past the window. It'll make the window look larger too.

It's a double rod so I can place a second lighter curtain, and look for a lighter curtain but I am a bit scared to go too light. The room is looking very boring with no contrast or personality.

You have a good start. I like the curtains, it's just that the rod isn't substantial enough to look right. A thicker rod would be better & curtains need to be shortened a tad so they just touch the floor (this can be done with iron on fabric tape if you don't sew). Hang the rod as suggested above wider than the windows. Like this:

I like this look celery girl. The plant, artwork and pillows help the room to look less stark. This is a good place to start.

The curtain rod is 1" diameter. I have to try and find a thicker and longer rod and rehang the curtains. When I purchased it I thought it would be large enough but now that you mention it, I can see that it isn't.

If you're keeping the curtains, I'd do two things. First, take them off the rod and hang them with rings and clips so they don't get all bunchy. And then shorten them so they just skim the floor.

Okay got it. Will I still have to find a thicker rod if I use rings and clips because finding a thicker rod isn't that easy. The curtains don't have to stay I don't find changing them. They were from Ikea and I can always move them to a different room.

Samayyz, I don't know what size the art is because I don't know how wide your couch is. I adjusted it to be proportional to the couch. Choose a piece that covers 2/3 - 3/4 the width of the sofa.

The sectional is 10ft wide. So I will have to find quite a substantial piece of artwork and frame.

The TV will be too high for comfortable viewing. That's a massive piece of furniture to seat three people.

Remember, you're not only thinking of color, but also texture and light. I think the important thing here is not to rush. Take your time buying pieces you love and mean something to you. I'm going to encourage you to collect things rather than rushing out to buy things.

The room lacks an earthiness, that spells all the comforts of home. The sofa is gorgeous! I'd focus on textures as well as color. I love the photo you've put under your profile. I think Tribal or folk-inspired fabrics such as ikats from any part of the world for pillows, or a wool kilim for pillows or rugs will give it interest. A coffee table in an organic shape by a craftsman in a natural wood in a color darker than the floors, and [metal shelves[(https://www.houzz.com/products/wright-shelving-unit-prvw-vr~57061721) like this one from Houzz will give it the earthiness it lacks. I'd save up and go to art galleries and look for a large painting for the wall by a local artist for behind the sofa (It's also a great way to meet new people!). Until then, swing by and look at wall peels over on Great Big Canvas --for now it'll do. You might want to look at some of those standing japanese rice paper floor lanterns, which have texture, shape and light!

I've always found designers like Terence Conran to be incredibly inspirational because he does things simply, with an eye toward good lines (your sofa has good lines!). I have a lot of his books written over a 20 year period, and I refer to them often.

The drapes? They're not interesting. They're flat and they look like amateur hour in comparison to that elegant sofa you've bought. Bring in someone who sells window coverings, and buy the correct thing once! (If you can't return them, just keep them up for now).

How will the TV be too high for viewing. We had a similar setup before but are just getting newer furniture to match our current style.

I also doubt that only 3 people will be sitting on the sofa. My old one was smaller but we easily sat 4 people. I think later we may get an leather ottoman or another chair to help seat another person but for right now I want to just finish off the room before thinking of more seating.

Since your sectional has those "lay-back" head rests, the TV location may be fine, and it sounds like the FP is faux, so heat damage won't be an issue. Proportion may be though. TV should be no wider than 75% of the FP width and hung 5" above it. The principle works just like for art.

Thank you decoenthusiaste, The FP is faux and it is smaller but it can still be returned until I can find something bigger. The TV however is non-negotiable, its my husbands one absolute must have. Its a 65" curved.

Do I buy an area rug in portion to the sofa or the entire room? The room has to entranceways one from the foyer one going into the kitchen which is still under renovation. The only problem with too large of an area rug is the room also has sliding doors that lead out to the backyard and I don't want people stepping on the rug quickly after coming in from the backyard.

Thank you Cali. I am taking all of your great advice in and your right about the window coverings. I never thought about bringing in a professional for just the window coverings but your right and that is exactly what I will do. From there I will slowly acquire items to complete the room. I have been in the house for 1 year now and after many renovations I think I am just getting anxious to have it all complete but I need to have more patience and realize it takes time unless I had an unlimited supply of money which I do not.

Can you give us a photo or a link to the fireplace so we know what you're working with here? A 65" curved screen is likely to completely overwhelm anything beneath it.

A basic rule for rug size is that at least front feet of all seating should be on it. You also don't want it so large that it goes wall-to-wall. I like to see 1 - 2' of floor around the perimeter.

I love the sofa and flooring. It's nice and airy. I'd pull in blues with an area rug, dramatic artwork, pillows, and a throw. Lighting is needed too. I'd think about a bit of contrast with a natural wood, industrial type coffee table if that works with your taste. I don't feel the drapes work with your style in this space. I'd think about switching them out with a fabric with less weight and a geometric pattern, perhaps. If you don't need to pull the drapes for privacy, you might consider short rods on each side of the window and cover the window as little as possible. A plant or two will soften the space even more.

Find art or rug you love and build on it...

This is the fireplace we ordered but we can still return it or just move it to another room. Only thing that must stay is the sectional because I love it, and just bought it and the TV because well it's my husbands must have.

I love the idea of geometric drapes. But I have not been able to find any I love in the right color. I also need them for privacy and to block out the light when watching TV.

This fireplace...

...is 46" wide and is going to be dwarfed by a 65" TV. It's also about as tall which will put your TV pretty high for viewing. Furthermore, it doesn't go with your very contemporary sofa and there is no way to extend the mantel to make it ground the TV.

You'd be much better off with a modern electric unit...

...around which you might add a mantel and some kind of built in.

I'm in agreement with grover... If that's the FP you're getting, stop the presses! Do something else that will work with the TV.

I agree with the FP no longer fitting the area. It was purchased befor my husbands sneak TV buy and the sectional. At the time the FP went with our décor but since many things have changed it no longer flows well. When I began renovating my house I had an idea of a very traditional or transitional décor but the more I purchased things I loved instead of things I knew would be pragmatic with 3 young kids the décor has evolved to a more contemporary look. I will concentrate on a rug for now and from there pic my artwork.

My husbands TV is killing the aesthetics of the room.

Yeah, I understand about taking one's time. We lived in our house for 17 years, raised two kids, and then did a massive remodel! The size of the rug depends on if you want all the legs on the rug; two legs on the rug and two legs on the floor; or just the coffee table on the rug. I like big rugs in general. I usually measure how much space my furniture takes and decide from there. I always like a some hardware along the edges, so I never go wall to wall rug. My favorite rugs are wool ones from Afghanistan --so versatile. I end up re-arranging them around the house all the time! Here's a carpet encyclopedia, though you might already know.
