Which paint color?

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi,

Which paint color would you choose to paint the entire house, right or left? The right is SW Alpaca and the left is SW Agreeable Gray.

I'm looking for a light and airy feel throughout the house. Our aesthetic is transitional + modern. I like both colors, my only reservation is they may be a little darker than I'd want for an all over color. All suggestions welcome!

*please note: the furniture in the pictures is not ours - we will have mostly neutrals, cream, white, grey, black. Thinking of painting the French doors white or light sage.

Thanks :)

We just did our home in SW Repose Grey and I love it. It's light and airy, traditional and modern. You may want to consider it. Of the colours you proposed, I like the Agreeable Grey.

Ok, you said both samples are on the "right." :) So, I'll vote for the one on the left - not sure of its' name. On my monitor the sample on the right is looking like it has some pink undertones.

'which color should I paint my whole house' ? you are basically showing us a sample of the paint color. the one on the left isn't much different from what's currently there now. both appear a tad warmer. Alpaca has more of a pink undertone

what are the other colors you have?

. you painted 2 tiny brush strokes. This is how you pick?

Paint a portion of the wall for goodness sake! how are you supposed to chose from a tiny section down by the baseboard. paint a good section, stand back and take another photo

Oh you're so right, I've updated right/left. The right does seem to have some pink undertones.

TIf, is repose gray a warm gray in person? Of course photos are kinda hard to tell for sure.

Why not leave the color the way it is now? Not sure why you are trading gray for gray, while also saying you aren't sure if the samples are too dark for your liking. The current color seems to fit the bill already? If the walls are in decent shape, save your money for something else.

I have some larger swatches above but didn't post the pic (attached: 2 furthest right colors). I will take your advice and paint a larger portion of the wall. Thank you for your feedback.

ok. that's better. don't like the pink ones

like any of these? I'm assuming you want a warm gray for the entire room?

BM Collingwood is a nice tone

This sure put a smile on my face;)! Cracked me up Beth! Seriously though... I see four tubs of paint on the floor. Crack out some rollers and put some paint on the walls. And not just one wall; several walls so you can get a good idea how it really looks in different light. If you like a color but feel it's a tad to dark have the paint store cut it by 25% or more. The sample on the right does appear to have a slight pink tone to it but it's too small to judge and I don't trust my monitor anyway!

Repose gray is a very good gray. I have cut it by 25% and it worked out very well also if you are looking for a bit of a lighter shade. Just saw your larger samples. Two of them do seem rather pink.

My common living spaces are Agreeable Gray. Great room has lots of windows, 12' glass doors, southern exposure. Foyer is north facing and has more shade. I think the color looks nice in all of those spaces. We also have 6" baseboards and medium brown hickory flooring. Good luck!

    Thanks all! Great suggestions.

We're repainting because we're actually having the walls retextured. Someone at some point textured them with a very large sponge randomly so some spots are very textured in big circles and others completely flat. Also, I think the existing color has a cool blue tint to it that I'm not loving.

The best way to assess paint color is to paint it on poster board with a white edge a couple inches wide on 3 edges. Cut the poster board in quarters and do one sample on each. Then move them room to room and wall to wall. They will look different in different rooms. I totally agree not to use the two with pink undertones though. I think the most promising one is the one between the two pinkish ones. I also definitely agree that Pale Oak and Repose Gray are worth sampling.

    Makes sense then.

I vote for the agreeable gray

I find your choices a bit too dark I would indeed vote to give repose grey and pale oak a try. But I like the current colors so we probably have diff tastes

Hi - We just updated our home in grays. Alpaca is beautiful and we used many other colors that were compatible with this color. We worked with a designer, Leslie Lewis & Associates. They were excellent & helped us with the paint choices. We did Alpaca in LR, Entry Hall, M Bath. Adjacent to the LR we did Functional Gray in the kitchen.

Beautiful home azcharrer! Very thoughtful use of color which proves there is no bad color ; just the bad use of color;)! I think it's a good idea if your doing a whole house interior to hire a color consultant to get just the right colors. There are so many variables with lighting on location that picking a color here is well ... a lucky guess at best!

Both are too dark for the whole house. Look at what other paint brands have to offer.
