Centaurea Montana did not bloom.

Hi everyone! I bought my house last summer and in June, the Centaurea Montana that were already there bloomed. There were about 2-4 blooms at one time, in June. Cut to this year, they did not bloom at all--and hardly grew. I noticed earlier in the spring, it looked like there were spider webs between the leaves and one bud that may have eventually been a potential bloom, had it grown more than 5" off the ground. What could cause this? I have read that these generally spread like crazy, so I am surprised mine are not growing well.

Back story: I did a lot of work on this bed late last summer and dug up a lot of gigantic day lily bulbs. Could I possibly have damaged the root system? Does it not matter? Thanks in advance.

Is that black wood-based mulch your addition?

The wood mulch could be depleting the plant of nutrients...it's usually a cast-iron plant...it took several years of constant digging to get rid of it in my garden.

It just doesn't look big or robust enough to flower yet. Maybe next year...

We haven't had the normal amount of rainfall here in the Midwest. All my perrenials are suffering because of that. I had to deep water an Echinacea yesterday and today that was stressed and wilted. Even my drought tolerant natives like Rattlesnake Master are having a hard time. Mountain Bluets are very fickle to begin with. The last one I planted a couple years ago didn't make it because I neglected to stay on top of it during a couple dry spells. This year is the driest year I have ever experienced here 40 miles south of Chicago. You will have to give it a lot of TLC for the rest of this year, just in order for it to be strong enough to overwinter. I wouldn't hold much hope for flowers this season,but I sure hope it comes back strong,and gives you a bunch next year.

Wow--I have no idea why I posted this in annuals, I am aware this is a perennial. I am so sorry. I will move the mulch from around the plant! Thank you everyone for responding.
