This morning, I noticed 2 blooms have been eaten by something, I suspect Japanese beetles( they we attacking my Meyer lemon blooms too) or a young praying mantis I saw lurking in the leaves! So 3 blooms remain. I hosed down the tree and sprayed it. I hope nothing else bothers it…I want some fruit this winter!

Update: I have 2 fruits on my tree! Something to look forward to in the middle of winter!

Congratulations! That is a nice looking Melogold.

Melogold is the sibling of Oroblanco and is a hybrid between Siamese Sweet pummelo and a white grapefruit. It's about as close as you can get to pummelo while still retaining the sweetness and juiciness of grapefruit. Personally I feel that grapefruit is an appropriate group to classify it into because apparently its pummelo parent did not have much to contribute in the way of flavor.

Further crosses of Melogold and Oroblanco probably won't be made because these two varieties are triploid, basically the tiny shriveled up seeds won't grow if you try to plant them.

Thanks for the info…surprisingly, the fruit was very sweet and juicy last winter! I didn't notice any seeds. I was so impressed with the quality of fruit considering it was grown up north! Fun to grow.
