applicance choices!

Hi all first time post here I just want to see some comments from those who have chosen all new kitchen appliances (new construction) and applied the principle of:

  1. start with the dishwasher

2. expand that brand to other appliances as you wish, or choose a different brand

my builder does all bosch to that answered the first question which is not a bad choice. I'll probably pick Bosch for the double ovens and microwave and maybe the gas cook top but leaning thermador due to their burner design. but I'm at a complete quandary to choose a refrigerator that would pair up with the other stainless choices. bosch makes refrigerators but I'm told they are outsourced to China and from what I find they are nothing remarkable. the smart phone companies don't inspire enthusiasm because of demonstrated lack of company support. what would you do in this situation?

Bosch is owned by the same company that makes Thermador and Gaggenau and makes their fridges in house from what I understand.

You can't really go wrong with Bosch appliances. I am getting their integrated 36" FD fridge (which is the same one as the Thermador), their 500 oven (because I rarely use an oven) and their 36" 800 induction cooktop. I had Bosch in my old condo and was very happy with them so I'm using them again in my new build.

Note that if you're doing a drawer MW, they are all made by Sharp so don't spend the money for the Bosch.

As for DW, the two most highly rated are the Bosch and the Miele. I'm getting the Miele because I prefer the layout on the interior to the Bosch.

Also for your range hood, make sure you get one with baffles for easier cleaning.

BTW: If you haven't looked into induction cooking, I highly recommend you do so.

The star shaped burners are an absolute pita to clean. Food gets on the star shaped metal- bakes on there and then you have the task of cleaning it off without marring the surface too much. I would not get the Thermidor gas cooktop.

Stick with Bosch and absolutely consider induction.

For the refrigerator- my understanding is the same as cpartist's- BSH and Miele refrigerators are made in a Turkish plant.

I just bought all new appliances 6 months ago, and here's what I did: I started with my range, because that was the one that I was most particular about and was least flexible about. I wanted an induction range with knobs, so there weren't too many options; I went with the LG induction range. After that, I didn't care if my other appliances were LG or not, only that they were stainless steel to visually look like a match. I decided which things I had a particular design wish for (range and fridge) and the other things were a mix of price and features.

I went with a Bosch dishwasher and it is very quite and cleans very well. However, I now realize I'm missing something I never really thought about: the interior is really set up for loading lots of place settings, but what I really need is to load lots of cook- and kitchenware, and only a few place settings. I'm finding the narrow, angled tines might be for holding lots of plates efficiently, but they're bad for loading pitchers and pots and empty pickle jars.

I also got a new range hood (Kobe), and don't have a microwave.

Bosch/Thermador/Gaggenau fridges are not made in house. They are made by Blomberg in Turkey. Blomberg makes the Miele fridges as well.

Regarding loading the Bosch DW. I have one and cook a lot. I also reuse glass jars and always have some in there, along with several plates/bowls. The tines can be angled or laid flat for cookware and the various movable ledges help hold odd things in place.

I place the more shallow pinch bowls, measuring cups, lids in the utensil rack. The rear of the lowest rack for large bowls/cookware/vases/large plastic containers/pitchers and the front for plates, while fitting in the odd thing here and there. Bowls/glasses/jars/small storage containers/lids go in the middle rack.

Everyone has their comfort zone, but I wanted to chime in with how I stuff my DW so that you know it's adaptable.

nice comments here thank you everyone. I will probably will stick to the Bosch DW and cooktop, and microwave supplied by the builder. its the refrigerator that puzzles me. its hard to imagine that for 3K one can't find a reliable one that will last more than 8 years and has decent mfg support.

I'm one who has a huge mishmash of appliances (all brand new) all chosen for different reasons in our new build. I have the Paykel Dishdrawers in place of a dishwasher (kind of like having 2 dishwashers in one), the Electrolux Twin Freezer/Fridge combo (looks & sized like a SubZero at a fraction of the price), a Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop, a Thermador Convection Oven, a Wolf Steam Oven, a KitchenAid Warming Drawer, Sharp undercounter Microwave, and Speed Queen W&D. Turns out they all look good together, and for us we have what works best for us in each individual appliance. By doing some creative shopping (floor models and such) we were able to get everything still new and under warranty at significant savings.

Obviously I'm one that says go for it, mix and match at will - of course there are others who will think it heresy....
