Wow, that’s a
name (Pink Sunrise) I haven’t heard in several years. Did you acquire this
cultivar here in the US or from another area? That is a somewhat important
piece of information to confirm or not the true name.

C. Pink Sunrise
was introduced about 2001-02 and sold first by K. Van Bourgondien & Sons of
Babylon, N.Y. USA. Pink Sunrise can be somewhat difficult to get confirmed
because it seems to go thru color phases depending on location and time of the
year.

I am
somewhat concerned about this being Pink Sunrise because only a few thousand
rhizomes were sold after its release and in this time frame the canna virus became
rampant.

The photos attached were first the breeder’s photo taken prior to
release and grown here in the US. The second photo was taken by the cataloguer taken
at another location and time of the year.

I will try
to address the virus question in another follow up.

This pink sunrise seems like a big mystery. Yes the cucumber mosaic virus is quite concerning,

im wondering if i can safely use the pollen from this plant for hybrizing, or will the virus still spread to the seedlings?

IMO, if you
are dealing only with CMV you should be able to use the pollen for breeding
providing your plant produces viable pollen. There is not universal agreement
with this opinion because some viruses have been demonstrated to transmit
during the fertilization process.

You must
keep in mind that even if your seedlings are free from virus that virus can be
transmitted from nearby infected cultivars. This is typically accomplished via
sucking insects.

In our
breeding program, once we understood the need to totally
segregate our seedlings,
we harvested both seed and pollen from infected plants with success. We
ultimately established a breeding line of plants free from virus and then
destroyed all infected plants; absolute no virus problems thereafter.

Also, does it look like it is infected with virus from that photo?

i am aware of virus being transmitted via sucking insects and im taking measures to prevent that. im really trying to decide if the plant is virused or not so i can get rid of it.

your knowledge is incredible, and i really appreciate, all the wisdom you've shared here. i was aware of most of the canna viruses but not the TAV. im sure most people on this forum would find the information very valuable and useful. Feel free to post long messages, they are full of information we all want :D

I live in the Caribbean so the temperature here is always between 30-33 degrees celcius all year round. non of my cannas really have any change in flower colour due to temperature, and the growing season is also year round.

The same plant in question has within the past few days sent up a new shoot. im going to attach pictures of this shoot. There is odd colouring on the new leaf. tell me what you think about it. This plant is growing in a pot as im isolating it from my other cannas. Now when i first got this canna about 2 months ago, the shoots that came up had the same colouration on the new leaves but as they aged they turned deep green and looked normal. it seems to be happening with this new shoot coming out of the same plant.

Being located in the Caribbean with temperatures remaining in the 86-91 degrees Fahrenheit range explains what is likely occurring in your canna. You a blessed with prime
canna growing conditions. The location allows for maximum growth rates, BUT it
also tends to allow this growth to mask many of the typical viral physiological
systems. In other words the plant grows faster that the virus virions can
interrupt the plants normal physiology. Under ideal conditions canna growth
increases but it seems that virions growth remains static. This typically does
not occur for most of us in cooler locations because we have more seasonal
temperature fluctuations and virus symptoms can become somewhat more pronounced
in our cooler temperatures.

Tissue culture labs often use this growth trait in an effort to clean up infected
plants. They induce rapid growth and attempt to harvest a microscopic slice
from the growing tip that is virus free. It is not quite that simple but
hopefully you understand the point.

Unfortunately I do see a lack of chlorophyll production in your newly emerged growth and some veinal striation. This is not normal and could likely indicate a virus
infection.

I would suggest you keep this plant segregated
from your other cannas and continue to observe it if you choose.

Well, i sprayed the plant with an herbicide and then placed it in several layers of bags and put it out with the trash. Sigh. Beautiful flower. But cant risk virus. It hurts my heart to watch it go but i had too.

Sorry for your loss. How about posting photos of your other cannas?
