I just pull the plants when they get too scruffy. But since they're annuals you do need to leave some pods if you want poppies next year. They won't rebloom if deadheaded, apart from that being a job so tedious I can't imagine doing it.

you can ... as the pods ripen.. spread them elsewhere.. or store in an envelope for planting next year ...

the term wildflower .. on some level.. suggests that they dont need any care .... and if you do so.. you are starting to tame them ...

you need to move on with your attention.. rather than fixate.. or be bummed .. about this plant.. finishing its circle of life ...

Actually deadheading is possible if you want to do it. Cut spent pods & store for seed & as you can see by my pic more blooms will form.

josh streppa, for real? i keep reading contradictory things about it. now i'm encouraged to try to deadhead again & see if it helps.

Lol yes it's true... I have grown poppies forever & I always deadhead to maximize blooms & pods & seeds for the following year.(s)

thank you, floral_uk-- i did notice that the later flushes of flowers have been smaller and fewer. also this helps clear things up-- if there aren't buds already waiting to bloom then deadheading won't help the plant to form new ones.
