Acer 'Pixie' anyone have pictures??

I'm trying to decide on a small upright red maple for my front entryway. Bloodgoods are nice, but I'd like something different than every other house on the block. Any recommendations for something that would be easy to keep at 6-10 feet in height?

I have thought about;

Skeeters broom

Twombleys sentinel

Emperor I

Pixie

Purple Ghost

The site would be full sun. I live in zone 6a.

Thanks.

The Twombley's and Emperor I will get larger than 6-10' (much larger!) and Purple Ghost needs some afternoon shade.

Pixie would work, as would Rhode Island Red and Skeeters Broom and Shaina.

You can Google numerous images of any of these. Just search under the botanical name....Acer plamatum________(fill in the blanks).

My 'Twombly's red Sentinel' is at least 8 years old and is about 7 ft tall.

Very nice! Do you find it filling out quickly or is it sparse for years at first?

I've only had the tree since last fall but so far the growth seems slow to medium.

I have a Pixie that according to my records I installed in May of 2014. It is in a lovely spot in ideal conditions and always leafs out nicely. But it sure hasn't grown- the Hakone grass towers over it.

To be clear it was a whip from eBay when installed.

Three years later it has increased in width and looks plenty healthy but is still under eighteen inches.

Poor photos- I can get better ones today if this cultivar really interests you.

Stuart, it looks like it'll be a nice specimen.

Ok wow slow growing Pixie! That might explain why I can find any decent sized ones.

Another option is Acer palmatum Elizabeth. It has grown faster than Shaina in my garden. I ordered from Whitman Farm last year (very big size for a 1 Gallon plant). What I like it better than Shaina is Elizabeth's more narrow and upright form.

    Below is from Mendocino:

Elizabeth is a very attractive dwarf Japanese maple with a dense bushy upright form. Elizabeth has new growth that is bright red and very vivid with the older foliage turning maroon. The color holds well into the summer even in hot climates. Elizabeth is fast growing when young, but will slow down when older staying very compact. Originated as a witch's broom mutation. Prefers sun/partial shade in well-drained soil. 5' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Hardy to -20 degrees. USDA zone 5.

Vivian, that is a perfect little plant for another part of my yard! The form it takes on looks amazing. I wonder if Whitman has any decent sized field grown ones. Any chance you have a picture of yours?

Here is my Elizabeth. Not a really good picture. The actual color is much more vivid with new growth bright red mixed with maroon colored old leaves.

Japanese maples are seldom field grown. All the growers I am aware of either grow in containers or root bags.

Vivian, Elizabeth is definitely finding a place here. My front yard is missing some color. The service berry on the left has slowly reversed in recent years. It's about 5ft but I'm thinking something a little taller will work.

I am a fan of acer palmatum 'amagi shigure' which is similar to 'purple ghost' but slower-growing and more pinkish in the spring I believe. I plan to get one next spring. I also like 'Hubb's red willow'

Is amagi shigure wind tolerant? If so I believe I found the plant I need!

I haven't read anything that says it's less wind tolerant than most other JMs. Hope that helps.

Couldn't find a decent amagi shigure. Settled on a Shaina that should be here by the end of September.,

    And one in the ground!

    Beautiful tree and color contrast!

It really is! I had no idea that the color was going to be even better in person vs pictures on the internet. Usually it's just the opposite.

For the record, Lucile Whitman of Whitman Farms does sell field grown-sized maples, and she'll ship them as well. I got a lovely large Mikawa yatsubusa from her this year. It had a very healthy root system, and because it was grown out in the sun it handled its transplant into a sunny location beautifully. Not a single crisp leaf, even after months of sun.

I've bought many maples from her over the years, but the smaller ones (and by that I mean her 1-2 gallons, which are often 3'-5') are greenhouse grown. They always seem to need some babying the first year in terms of sun/shade exposure. I was very impressed with how differently a field grown tree behaved. Shipping was incredibly reasonable, too.

You got a beautiful tree! Enjoy it! If in the future you want more, I'd recommend Whitman Farms above almost any other seller.
