Seedless Kishu, why dost thou mock me?
Hola everyone!
I grafted another 34 buds 3 weeks ago: 12x Meiwa kumquat (CCPP), 4x Valentine (owned), 2x Xie Shan (owned), 2x Oro Blanco (owned), and 14x Seedless Kishu (CCPP), with 2x buds per tree. After unwrapping, all of them took except the Seedless Kishu, of which 100% failed. They were grafted onto a mix of C-35, Sour Orange, and Kuharske; does anyone know of any graft incompatibilities, or did I just get dud budwood?

9 years agoComgradulation tom on your successes. The picture you have above look like what I got over 100 tries. Try this for you seedless kishu
I did 6 of these and only 1 took but 4 of them held in for a month before croaking.

Mole, that is still impressive success! Grafting is a challenge that can be very rewarding if you aren't afraid to screw up some trees. As we both know, that happens, haha!
We had some pretty hot temps (95-100*F) here too after I did my grafting in mid-June, but what struck me as odd was that the only failures were the kishu--and all 14 were failures. The trees were kept in the shade for 90% of the day (except in late evening), so I'm just puzzled why only that variety ended so disastrously.
I'm planning on giving a good number of these trees away when I'm done... so just keep that in mind.

On the plus side, this batch of Kishu budwood was much more successful. I had three failures out of 15 buds/grafts, two of which were due to new techniques. Chip grafting seems to be pretty effective if you can get the cambium layers to line up, but if not, it's game over. Here's one of my chip buds:
I'll probably stick to T-budding in the end, though. Cleft grafting did not turn out well at all because it was a pain in the rear end to get the cambium to line up.-Tom
