I have a small back yard and have noticed a dog urine smell in a particular area. I've ordered some Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator. Reading Gardenweb posts I have also come across the suggestion to sprinkle garden lime on the offending area to 'sweeten' it.

I'm trying to understand the connection between lime and odor but so far have seen no proof or scientific reason showing that it would help. Does anyone know why lime is suggested and whether it works?
