Stressing about kitchen backsplash

Almost done with kitchen renovation. Just installed kitchen backsplash with marble 4 x 12 subway tile. Tiles are different finishes. Some are textured, some are smooth. Not grouted yet. Plan is for bright white grout. First thing I see when I look at it is stripes, and that was not my intention. Thoughts on whether you like the look? Should I take it out and start backsplash over or live with it and see what I think in time?

Hmmm not sure. I see stripes also. Don't grout unless you are going to be happy with it

I see what you mean. If you really hate it, now is the time to take some of the light colored ones and mix some dark in. You have a beautiful kitchen.

The idea was good, but the tiles are too large for the area; which is why you see the stripes. A smaller size (more rows) would have allowed the variations not to be so stark. You are in your kitchen everyday, will it always bother you if they stay? That's the answer.

I like the look. I have the same backsplash in a bigger size tile and before it was grouted I had the tile person take out any tiles I didn't like and replace them with different ones. Try that first because I think once you mix up the stark white row in the middle you'll like it.

Why were tiles not randomized/mixed from multiple boxes?

Unless it is monitor color distortion the back splash looks whiter than the creamy white of the rest of the kitchen so besides the stripe this may also be an issue. Your kitchen is beautiful and I wouldn't "live" with the tile if I was 2nd guessing it already.

I love your kitchen. I would fix tile. Everything else is beautiful & the tile will drive u crazy if u leave it.

Gorgeous kitchen and if you leave the backsplash it will take away from everything else. Change them out for sure.

I think you may have the same countertop as me :).

I'd remove it now and select something that works better with your other choices. The marble, striped or not, is the wrong look with your brick trim. You need something warmer. I'm a little concerned that I'm not seeing a heat guard behind the range or exhaust.

Your kitchen is beautiful but it looks like the installer was going for a pattern for sure. Can they still mix the tiles up so there's more variation?

This is a good example of warm and cool whites. My white cabinets are going in this month. I'm so worried about the countertops I've chosen. They are Calico Quartz. What is the name of these countertops?

Your installer should've mixed the pieces together instead of putting all of one color/shade in the same row. It should look more like this where the light and dark pieces are randomly placed.

You will always see the stripes.....It needs to be re-done and you need to stand there and watch the installer do his work so nothing like this will happen. Surely he didn't think this was right..

Why did you mix different kinds of tile? Buy all the same type of tile for the re-do. Part of the problem might have been that he was separating the different types of tile??? He's probably not used to seeing two types of tile done on a single backsplash.

Thank you to everyone for the advice. I've decided to leave it for now because I am undecided what to replace it with. The brick window sills are staying, so I need to find a tile that will complement the brick, as well as the kitchen. If you have any suggestions/photos, please post.

The brick is a non-issue. Not that noticeable and doesn't warrant trying to "match". That will only call attention to the brick which would be unfortunate. The brick need only to be a punctuation mark not a feature that needs accentuating or matching or complimenting.

Why prolong the agony and why go ahead and grout when replacing is the goal.

Whatever you decide to do, I'd do darker grout to go with your dark windows

paint the brick the same black as the window, or the same white as your cabinets. another option is to try and make a sill from the marble. what is behind the stove? did you tile over there as well?

BTW, I love your black windows and doors. it's beautiful w/what you have.

now would be the time to remove the stripe tile. I vote for replacing the brick one w/the carrara tiles. Or vice versa if you 'd rather have the texture (it appears those are a bit too white tho). Do one or the other, not both. Sorry, but it just doesn't look good. After it's grouted, it will be that much more difficult to remove and replace.

What is the name of your quartz? Maybe Beth can make tile suggestions for it.

To me it seems an easy fix, why not just take out the row of tiles you would prefer not to have and just replace the tile with the ones you like so they are all the same. Your only replacing a couple of rows.

Dana, you've already had one mis-fire so don't do anything else that would make your backsplash stand out but not in a good way. Keep it simple and stick to your white grout.

Add some dramatic art if you want to spice things up.

I would absolutely fix the tile in your gorgeous new kitchen. In my opinion, it doesn't matter what color grout you use, it will never look right. As you said, this was not the look you were going for. If it were me, I would never be happy with a "mistake" and would see nothing else every time I walked into my otherwise beautiful new kitchen. And by the way, I never noticed the brick windowsill.
