Missouri Botanical Garden says MF will be 5'-6' and Ivory Halo will be 4' to 6'. I think that's pretty close as far as size.

IME they are pretty good as far as size.

I'm worried that Midwinter Fire may be as large as Elegantissima. I have that one, too and it is too large for what I want. I like the finer branches and smaller size of Ivory Halo, and want the same for my "new" shrub. Does anyone have all three types?

Hello, I recently purchased an ivory halo and an arctis fire because they are supposed to be smaller. Would you be kind enough to tell me how big is your ivory halo? I am in Hamilton and would like to see if the reported size is true. Thanks

Jen Loo: One Ivory Halo, planted in Spring 2015 is 4 ft wide and 3 ft tall. I don't prune for height, but prune out 1/4 to 1/3 of branches in the spring to get the reddest branches. I moved another one a few weeks ago that was 5 years old so I pruned it way back for transplanting. It was about 4.5 ft wide and 3.5 ft tall. I had never pruned it until I moved it this Spring because it was in such a tight spot that it was very hard to work around. I don't have an Arctic Fire because I was also concerned about mature size. I was hoping for an answer here, didn't get one, and so bought more Ivory Halo. I now have planted several at the back of my deep yard. Pretty green/white leaves in the summer & beautiful red stems in our long winter. I also have Elegantissima solving a problem spot in my yard - good where they are but big shrubs.

Thanks for the response vivien23, much appreciated. I hope mine grows a bit taller and it sounds like I should be less aggresive with the pruning and maybe feed it really well to encourage more height. Failing that, i'll move it and try something else. Happy gardening :)

You're very welcome! Maybe you are looking for Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' . I just measured mine (5 years old, prune out 1/4 to 1/3 stems each spring to keep the stems red). They are 5 ft wide and 5.5 ft tall. Happy gardening back to you!
