It is possible that it may just be too hot.

You mentioned the ones out back not suffering like the ones out front ... are you growing plants out front on a balcony and out back on a patio? Or did you mean that the plant's sitting behind the ones at the front of the patio?

How often are you watering? In a hot arid climate, I would expect plants to dry out very quickly. So in that regard, it may be a case of insufficient water. However, it is also possible that the soil temperature is getting too high if the pots are getting blasted by the sun. In which case, there is the possibility that if you can find a way to keep the pots cooler (perhaps shading them or draping with a reflective material, et cetera), you might mitigate that problem.

I seem to recall reading that many people in such climates as yours, grow toms and peppers as more of a fall to spring crop because your summers are so brutal. But I could be misremembering.
