Replacing grass with clover

Can anybody tell me how to go about replacing an existing healthy grass lawn (mixed fescue) with white clover? Do I just overseed with clover or do I have to rip up the existing grass? Our dogs are killing the grass with urine spots and the clover looks like it might be a good alternative.
