What happened to my pumpkin?

I notice a big soft spot on it. I assume it was rotten, but I cut the spot and it not rotten inside. Is the pumpkins ruined when this happens? Also it had attracted many ants to the soft spot. I think it kind of sort of ruined as far as being a Jack O Lantern.
