Can you post a photo of the chairs that are oppisite the tv as well as a photo of the wall that the curtains are on?

There are some very beautiful features to your home. Are you planning to replace any of the furnishings. Are you open to painting the brick or looking for a color palette to work with the brick? I think adding more color would be fun.

I think you should start by rearranging your furniture. Do you need that much seating or can you eliminate a sofa and chair?

    The family is big!

LOL. I think we can work with big families. I would suggest making 2 seating groups and moving the tv. I would remove the dresser that is holding the printer from the room. Put the solid brown sofa where the dresser/printer is. Put the solid brown 2 cushion sofa on the brick wall. Position the solid brown chair opposite of where the dresser currently is.

For the other sofa set: Put the longest sofa on the tv wall (this makes 2 sofas on the tv wall). Put the loveseat on the curtain wall. Put the chair next to the solid brown chair. Put the TV on the brick wall.

I would see if that is an arrangement that is liveable/better and then look at accessorizing.

What about the open spaces on the brick wall? What designs could go there?

I think those spaces would be perfect for tall statues, driftwood, a hanging plant, or chimes. You could also add shelving to hold books.

Here are a couple of ways people are decorating a niche or wall cut out. I would also suggest plants, fabric, or stained glass.

In addition, if you love the color of the stone, you should paint the stark white walls to coordinate with the stone. It would warm your living room by using a tan tone from the stone. I would keep it light though.

Here are a few examples with stone and warmer paint. Plants are great additions to any room.

Have you considered accent colors? Most of the finishes in your room are grey and medium brown.

An area rug will pull your furniture layout together and could lighten your room a bit with the darker gray flooring.

Do you want the niches to be decorative or functional for storage such as books? ...or a combination?

Is it possible to get a photo of the windows with the curtains drawn back?

Here is a floor plan that might work for you.

    1) Paint the wall with the brick a brown color to match the darkest brick. I would paint that wall and the long wall on the right the same color: rich taupe.

    2) Relocate the tv to in front of the niches and hang plants at the same height in the niches behind the tv. I find the niches fight the two arch doorways, so make them an interesting focal wall.

    3) If you need all the seating for your large family, make the long wall the most interesting. Line up the printed sofas and install a picture shelf above, as long as possible. Take all of your photos and arrange them on the picture shelf. See the inspiration pics below.

    4) Hang the two portrait drawings next to each other in the dining area, between the china cabinet and the desk (the one you had the printer on). Beautiful drawings, by the way.

    5) I drew in a very large area rug for the seating, added a large oval ottoman and some small cube tables. The cube tables should be all the same and can be moved around as needed.

Because you have so much furniture in these rooms, try to keep the art in only a few places and not on every wall. By hanging the two large drawings together, visually they will make a special statement in the dining room. It' s the same with family photos: It's more interesting if you treat it like a gallery. Placing them on a shelf also gives you the option to add and take away.

    Hope this helps!
