Kitchen layout help

Hello, I am hoping you can help me with my kitchen layout. We are in the early stages of planning our major kitchen renovation. We have been in our 1960s ranch home for almost 4 years and plan on making this our forever home. The kitchen is not very enjoyable to work in and has a very cramped layout. We are expecting to have to knock down walls and move doors in order to create a better layout. I would like to remove the pantry and also open the kitchen up to the dining room and living room. I am not sure if this would look right, since the living room is a sunken living room and lower than the dining room/kitchen/foyer. I am the main cook in the family and spend a lot of time in the kitchen. We currently have two children ages 6 and 1. I would really like to be able to watch the children while I am preparing meals.

* I did not include the current layout of the kitchen as we are open to moving plumbing, electrical and hvac. The sink is currently under the only window in the kitchen. I do like it there but I am not opposed to moving it.

Must haves:

An island or a large breakfast bar for meal prep

I would love to have a large farmhouse style sink.

We bought an electric stove/oven 3 years ago and would like to use it when we redo the kitchen. However, I am open to replacing it and adding double ovens and a different style stove.

Thank you all in advance. I am really excited to start this whole process.

I am going to attach a few photos of the current layout.

This is the dining room looking into the kitchen. One idea we have went back and forth about is opening this wall and putting in a breakfast bar. I would really like to completely open the kitchen to both the living room and dining room though.

This is the living room which is approx. 7.5 inches lower than the dining room/kitchen/foyer.

The foyer. The door you see to the left is the current pantry door.

Kitchen standing near the door to the patio and the door to the basement.

You've done a lot of work on that layout, but it's difficult to read. I'd suggest just drawing the kitchen and pantry area (area in the yellow box), since we've seen the bigger picture. If possible use the scale 2 squares=1 foot, which will provide more space for measurements.

You could use a counter height pony wall between the kitchen and sunken LR. You'd be able to observe the kids, but it would provide some separation and a place for base cabinets and counter.

Thank you mama goose. I do like the idea of a pony wall adding separation but still giving me a sight line into the Living room. I have attached a photo of the kitchen/pantry area -scale 6inches/square.

Is there any other information I could provide that would be helpful? I forgot to add in the original post that the wall running along the living room and dining is not a load bearing wall. I have played with several kitchen layout programs but just can not seem to find a layout I like.

I couldn't fit an island but I have a peninsula for you. At the back of the peninsula there are 2 seats on the kitchen side (counter height) and on the LR side I have 15 deep cabs. Maybe you can have bar height seats there but I don't know how a half wall or rails would look like b/w the seats.

I hope there isn't much traffic from the foyer side. I moved the doorway towards the LR so people wouldn't pass too close to the range.

I don't know if you have another place for a pantry. For food storage I have a 12" deep tall cab next to the fridge facing the exterior wall and a 15" deep one across that. If you feel a full height cab would make the patio entry too crowded you can consider a 42-48" tall one.

I have a MW drawer under the tall uppers.

Thanks Sena! I would have never come up with anything close to that design. We had met with a kitchen contractor who told us he could fit a "huge" island in our kitchen. I was a little skeptical. He also didnt want to discuss the design in much detail before we gave our 10% deposit ;) . Needless to say we did not choose to go with him. I love the idea of having the large peninsula and honestly didnt think I would be able to fit that much usable counter space into our tiny kitchen.

That doorway to the stairs and patio really kills a lot of space. Here's an idea that puts the kitchen in the dining room. The "island" is flush with the step down to the living room
