Raised beds

My husband wants to build a raised bed garden, but to have the beds high enough to not have to bend, it would require so much soil. My idea is to have the beds table height - 26-28" or so - with legs underneath, much like you'd see in a greenhouse. My question is, how deep would the individual boxes have to be to assure a good crop? 12"? 18"? And my thought would that the bottom could be slats and lined with landscape cloth rather than solid wood with holes drilled for drainage. What do you think about that?
