The long story is that I recently refinished my kitchen. Kitchen colors are grey and white with walnut accents. I will be adding navy and chartreuse accents in rugs and towels. I love it. The dilemma has been getting the new kitchen color scheme to flow into the rest of the house which has been a much warmer palette of what I call "harvest colors" - browns, russets, reds, greens, mustards. Not having the funds to redo the whole house, I've tried to change pillows and accent pieces in FR, LR, and DR to tie into the grey and walnut from the kitchen. So with my existing beige walls and beige/brown furniture I've been trying to replace the harvest toned accents with grays, blues and graphite tones. There continue to be a couple bits of red in rugs and a chair. I also have pops of chartreuse here and there for contrast.

I have one wall above the couch that remains empty. To save funds I'd like to use the same mirror that has always been there, but with a refinished frame. The frame right now is a lighter, honey toned wood. I think this color looks a bit dated (I bought it 17 years ago) and doesn't go with the tones I'm trying to use. I need help figuring what to do with the frame on this mirror. I think it will make or break the family room. I know nothing about refinishing wood, but am a fan of YouTube tutorials!

So here are my questions. Can I make this mirror work?

1: paint or stain?

2: Color - Gray? Dark brown? Distressed gray over brown?? An entirely different color?

3: technique - straight paint? Chalk paint? Stain? A combo?

Please note i am OUT. OF. MONEY. I do not have the funds to repaint walls or buy new furniture/rugs. I wish I could buy something new for over the couch but can't seem to find anything I like for a couple hundred dollars or less. Everything I like is $1,000 and not an option, so really hoping I can make this mirror work. If you have it in mind to suggest something other than the mirror, please know if it's over $300 it's a no-go.
