Schreiner's vs Sutton's?

Hi, I wanted to add some reblooming irises to my garden and see collections at both gardens. I've heard great things about Schreiner's (actually Sutton's gets good reviews, too) and wondered if it was worth the extra money to go with Scheiner's as Sutton's collections are about half the price. I would love to hear of your experiences at either or both.

The father, George Sutton, died and his son Michael has continued the business at a new location. I've not ordered from the new place. The many mismarks from the old place left a bad memory.

And I've not ordered from Schreiners! But I have heard raves about the health and size of their rhizomes. So if the price doesn't deter you . . . . . . . . . . . .

One thing about Schrieners is sometimes it takes a yr or so..to settle in here and bloom for me. You will get huge iris and they are wonderful people to do business with. Its about time for their summer sale so maybe you can catch some bargains that way.

I see that you're in Maryland... my rebloomers bloom in May and early November. Most years, a killing frost turns the November bloom stalks to mush. I'm keeping Harvest of Memories and Feedback because they're great iris but I'm not buying any more rebloomers. Hope yours do better than mine did.

Hi, thanks for all the responses. Cecily, that is a bit discouraging but I've got to try a few. Maybe I should try the ones you mentioned.

For the past 7 years, my wife and I have driven to Salem to visit Schreiners in late May when they are in full bloom. They have a spectacular garden that is open to the public from around mid May to early June. We used to order all of our irises from them, but have been trying other companies more recently.

We placed an order with Suttons last year because they seem to have a stronger emphasis on re-blooming irises. We live in central CA and have a very long blooming season. We were extremely pleased with the irises that they sent us. The quality was similar to those we received from Schreiners. Their prices were considerably lower (big selection of irises for only $5) than Schreiners and we got a quite a few bonus irises: we ordered 13 and got 10 Bonus Irises, including 2 that were 2016 releases. All were true to type. This year we ordered 17 and got 7 Bonus Irises. Needless to say, we are very pleased with the products we receive from this company. Perhaps they can sell their irises for less because they don't have the expense of a large demonstration garden and a large paper catalogue. Still, we continue to order some from Schreiners each year, as we want to support their program.
