Can you help me identify these patches of grass in my lawn. Photo 1,2,and 4 is a grass that has been spreading out in different areas,it's very thick and dense always a good green color, but i dont know whether to control it or let it just grow.Photo3 is what the majority of my lawn grass looks like and will turn yellow/brown with drought while the other stuff stays green. Please help.

Looks kinda like quackgrass, but I'm not an expert.

I pulled some up for a closer picture. It is very fine bladed and woven tight like a rug, when i pull on it it sort of comes up horizontally. Also very squishy when walked on.I went for a ride today and noticed a lawn that consisted mostly of the same looking stuff.Could this be a type of bluegrass?I should mention that compared with the rest of the lawn it grows very slowly height-wise.It has been spreading for the last 3 or 4 years now.

The first and last two pics you posted looks like bentgrass. Where are you located? Do you know what type of grass is the main grass growing in your lawn? The 4th pic you posted almost looks like zoysia.

I live in northeast ohio.I thought of zoysia grass too but i have never planted any.The only seed i have ever used over the years to overseed has been scotts kbg.One time about 10 years ago i put down kbg midnight but it never came up.

Use these links to help you ID it. From the first few photos the blades look wide compared to the others, that's why I thought it might be quackgrass. It's just hard to tell from photos. I don't think it's bentgrass because some links say it's high maintenance to keep it nice, especially in the summer, so I'm not sure how it would be thriving while everything else browns.

I agree if it were bentgrass it would be dead by now i think.I don't have a magnifying glass handy so it is sort of hard to look closely enough to see any vertical hairs coming out of it similiar to zoysia. One thing to note is there used to be a bird feeder in one of the areas, after i pulled the feeder post out this stuff started to grow in that area.I can't explain the other spots however.Wild bird seed germination?I will try to get some more overall pics of my lawn tommarrow.

On the ID, i don't know. There are definitely a couple of different species evident from the different shades of green. If they're thriving in summer, I would assume they are either summer weeds or a type of warm season grass, so being in Ohio, I would think you'd be better off with a cool season grass. If this is the case, the ID shouldn't be too important if you're looking to get rid of it and plant cool season grass everywhere. If you decide to just kill the green stuff and reseed in the fall, you should get something with quinclorac or mesotrione, which will kill most warm season grasses and many grassy weeds, but won't harm cool season grasses. They don't control bermudagrass, but I don't think that's what you have. I've used Tenacity, which has mesotrione. It seems to work pretty well. I picked it over quinclorac because it kills nimblewill.

This stuff doesn't die over the winter. The spots get bigger every summer which tells me it must be sending out rhizomes.
