Shade/blind debate...

We have west facing windows and have put off window coverings for years. Beautiful view over the lake, but more permanent neighbours across the road make privacy a concern in evenings. Primarily the issue is that we can't eat in our dining room or at our island for about an hour and a half each day for 1/2 the year without being dazzled by the sun.
So we have looked at sunshades -risk that you can see in at night, roller blinds with alternating bats of opaque and transparent which give versatility, now the open up/down cellular- which seem very practical but I worry that they would be easily dented/creased and we have two youngish rowdy kids and a very enthusiastic (picture assertive vacuuming).

Love some suggestions!

Check out top down/bottom up shades. Control the view and or the light and get them out of the kiddos' reach too. They come cordless, cellular, roman, blackout and other options. You can always flank the windows with a pair of stationary panels for some softness, color and pattern.

Beautiful view!

We are kind of in the same boat, but decided on shades...we decided it's easier to add fabric later, mostly for aesthetic purposes, but for sun/privacy block, we're going with shades.

My hubs will roll up/down a shade, but I know in my heart he will not futz with curtains on a daily basis.

Hunter Douglas Silhouettes will give you the most options from "nothing" there at all to filtered light on the entire window, to partway down and looking like a roman shade..... to privacy. Worth the money. Can even be motorized though I'd hide the remote with little kids. Look for a dealer in your area. You will do ONCE with zero regrets, guaranteed. I find top down bottom up.........hideous. In a word.....UGH. Sorry : (

We have a similar situation. I just went with Colorlux (by comfortex) roll up blinds. In the Colorlux line they do these in a linen fabric. Cordless, remote, or continuos cord are all options. They also make the cellular in linen fabric too. So many of the cellular shades feel like paper to me, but these were more like a fabric linen.Because of the expanse of my windows cellular were not an option in most of my windows, which is why I went roller blind. I will be placed stationary panels on the ends for softness.
