Help w/ lawn please!

Hello:

Desperately need some help please. A month and a half ago (June 5, 2017) we had new RTF Sod installed. Unfortunately, the landscaper has abandon us and left us with no instruction on care for the new grass except to "keep it wet". Well, I'm afraid we may have exceeded that. Now I can't tell what to do, more water or less water. Or, are we screwed? I also mowed one and a half weeks ago to 4" height.

Here are some photos if someone with professional experience/knowledge please give some advice on what to do.

Thank you very much,

How much are you watering currently?

You want to apply an inch of water per week, preferably all at one time.

    Thank you for your response.

First 2 weeks we watered 2 times a day for 30 mins.

    Week 3 & 4 Reduced to 7 mins twice a day.

Week 5 increased to 15 mins every morning.

Week 6 reduced to 10 mins every other day.

Just trying to figure out what it wants/needs.

No pets & the grass gets full sun from 11:00ish until 6:00is. Its been in high 70s to high 80s since grass was installed. Whats odd too is that those areas were green & full unti I mowed on 7/5/17.

    Much appreciated!

Time to switch to the big boy watering schedule. 1" per week, as gardengal48 indicated. Place an empty tuna can in the yard while watering and when it's full, that's 1" of water.

First, stop thinking of water in time. I made this mistake and paid for it in renovation. Every sprinkler has a different rate of watering. Some will say to measure it and remember the time, but I only use the time as a reference to check my cups if I'm using a sprinkler. I also measured my irriagation and use the timing there, but I still put out cups beforehand and make sure it stays even. These were the smartest things I ever bought for my lawn:

I use them every week. I found out that when I was watering at recommended times provided to me, I was WAAAAAAYYYYYY under-watering my lawn. I use rotors on my South lawn for wind and it takes about 2 hours to get an inch.

You are probably at too frequent of water after week six with sod. It takes a bunch in the beginning, but you need to start training those roots to dig. If I were you, I'd split your water to 1/2 inches 2X per week....like Sunday and Thursday for a few weeks and then go to 1 inch once a week. Cut your grass as tall as possible which will help your roots too. If that mow on the 5th was your first cut, you probably shocked the grass a bit too.

Also, since you are in the PNW, let me leave you with the lesson it took me a bit to learn: even in the Spring, when it is raining 4-5 days a week...you may not be getting anywhere near the water your grass needs to be lush. 4-5 days of rain can be 0.2 inches in the PNW. I usually leave one of those cups out somewhere and use my sprinklers to make up the diff during this time.

Looks like you got a lot of help on watering. But maybe something is going on with the soil. Once cool product I've tried is Turf Max. It worked for my yard and now I reocmmend it to everyone I walk their dogs that have spotty lawn problems. Since there is a drain and some of the patterning is along it, there might be something going on there too. Anyway, their small and you might need to find a place that carries it. Here's their website http://www.greenasitgets.com/

BTW, I see some probable poa annua seedheads. Might want to rip those out of your lawn ASAP or you'll keep seeding it in.

Thanks for all the support gang & suggestions. With regards to the dead spots, will those come back or are they permanently dead? What do I need to do? Just use the Turf Max?

If it is actually a watering issue, it probably is not dead. But, it could be another issue as others have pointed out. The area around your drain does seem really weird. Rule out watering first before doing anything else.
