Defining the dining area

Instead of defining the dining area in this open space with a rug, I want to do it with the ceiling--using crown molding to define the area, and adding a new chandelier. I thought i could use the same concept of 3 feet beyond the table for the dimensions. The ceilings are only 8 feet high and to the right of the dining area is the kitchen, separated by a 5 foot wall. Any thoughts?

I like the idea but I wonder if the ceiling treatment would look wrong if it's not lined up with your columns into living/family room space.

I haven't chosen a chandelier yet but I am thinking either something very open and airy or two cylinder types. Any thoughts about one large or two small ones? And I most likely will paint the ceiling inside the crown molding a different color--maybe a lighter shade of the color on the wall by the fireplace to tie the two in together.

Love the idea of lining it up with the columns, but I think the one column is too far over. Your thoughts?

I think it's fine if the chandelier is out of line with the column area, unfortunately I think that you'll ultimately need to use a rug to define the space. I think if you put the detail on the ceiling you will always see that something looks "not quite right"

Is there enough space to turn table perpendicular? If the ceiling detail stretched across two of the openings into family room it might work.
