First Smith fig

This is the first fig of my 5 potted figtree's. The tree's are in their 5 th year and producing well. My wife split this first one to get her opinion. Not bad she sad, for me it was excellent.

The Chicago Hardy so simple to grow and underrated in my opinion an excellent dependable fig.

Black Madeira on other hand difficult in many area's because of its long ripening time but well worth the wait, here it is best in our yard to eat growing in large container near Chicago.

I've never had a chance to eat a freshly picked ripe fig. How would you describe the taste? :)

All the sites selling them generalize it as "excellent flavor, sweet, or figgy" lol

A excellent choice for sure, you can go wrong with this one. Out of 12 varieties that i grow this one rank 2 or 3 , i haven't tried all of the 12, so far Negronne is the 2nd one i have tried, it is also way up there.

That is great to hear, Negronne is first on my list of figs I want to grow. Which fig ranked number 1 for you so far? Or even the ones rank 3-5?

Chicago hardy is my old standby have these tree's for over 20 years now. I used to live in the Chicago burb's with my friend Martin who goes back longer than me. I have a L.S.U. Gold, big fig, it will be the 4th year for this guy, last year was so-so some very good some not so but also a keeper. Salc do not know yet, probably a 4 or 5. D.K. 5, Stella do not know yet,maybe soon next month.
