What could work here?

I was thinking of changing out glass side table and lamp with a mirror and floor lamp. I am leaning towards a mirror to help bounce light from windows directly across room. the ceiling is 8" and width is coming from foyer so its a little narrow. Any and all suggestions are appreciated

If you still want to keep that table at the end of the sofa (I wouldn't) there is a tall lamp in the space behind the fireplace with an open dark base and white-ish shade. Switch the two lamps and see how that works. But the fundamental problem you have is way too much "stuff" everywhere and too much large furniture for the space. Big art will help "tame" the large pieces in the room and bring color into the space. The more color the better. Everything is basically brown and black. I will find a few options for you to consider, if you are open to them.

ok, seems consistent that I need something bigger over the couch. The round piece in the kitchen is actually a clock. Hubby is being difficult and wants to keep the black and white family portrait over the couch as is. Could I flank the family portrait with larger wall sconces (assuming I don't use table and lamp anymore) or other decorative wall decor? I know it won't bring in color but I am o.k with monochromatic and adding interest with texture.

Yes, you could put sconces or some other decor on each side of the portrait over the couch, but it would be trite.

I would hang a painting in its place and replace the picture above the couch with a big horizontal mirror.

Doesn't exactly knock your socks off, does it?

I agree 100% Groveraxle, it's overused and not the most interesting or original, but better than wothout them

Another thought to keep hubby happy is I have four colored canvas portraits of the kids 2 are 18" H by 24"W and the other 2 are 18" Square. They are currently next to the TV if I arrange them above couch would that be big enough to complete that look? But then I'm sure my black and white family portrait would it go well next to the TV....2 big black squares side by side????!!

Flo, here is a picture of table and lamp removed (sorry, baseboards still need to be installed) feels too empty to be honest

What is it that makes it so hard for people to commit to art? It's not like you have to agree to give up your first-born child or something.

My favorite use of family portraits is this:

Try lining up the three of the kids alone without the group shot. Hang them about 3", no more, apart. That should take up 5 1/2'.

took these pieces from another room, thought?
The height from ceiling to top of the couch is 60". The individual family photos are only 18"H
will that still look too empty?

What about putting the family portrait in your master bedroom. Most people like their family photos in personal places. Or perhaps on the wall with the TV. A new arrangement of the pieces on that wall could help balance the TV. Large clocks have a place in some areas, but that place isn't the best. Perhaps on another wall in the kitchen area? It is all about balance and tones, textures and scale. If the family portrait stays then I would do a "gallery" wall that encompasses the portrait. It is just to scale up that wall to balance the size and bulk of the sectional and the dark wall it is facing being the fireplace. Just some ideas for you to ponder. Maybe I'll find some photos you can share with hubby that might help him visualize things. Most men (not all) have limited abilities to visualize a total space and the relationship to scale and various other items. Maybe your hubby is different, but just helping visualize for him can be useful in creating a good compromise that improves your living space.

I was typing that post and got a phone call, and groveraxle got in before me. I like the space more open at the end of the sofa. If you need something, perhaps a low green plant on a stand might be small enough to meet your need for something there, but still leave a more open walk through space. I think the photos of the family with the white backgrounds you have by the TV would work much better over the sofa and the large portrait with the black frame works better on the TV wall. A switch might be great. Worth trying.

    This is approximately to scale:

    This size would be better:

Since there's a huge push for you to get rid of the table, here are two more looks. I do think you need something taller than the plant I show below:

As I mentioned earlier, a small footprint for a floor lamp is important if you want a floor lamp in that location. A tripod style is a tripping hazard in that location. One that has a base that slides under the sofa possibly.

Nice work groveraxle. I am not criticizing your efforts. I like the shelfs in kitchen better than clock.

wow....groveraxle, I'm really liking the 3 individual( enlarged ) canvas pictures above couch with plant, I'm also open to keeping my glass side table with glass table light .....Now can we get creative with what to do next to TV once the other photos will be removed.
the space is approx 62" H x 54"W thank you so much for all your time and help!

how would my 30" clock look next to the TV or my black and white family portrait 29.5 H x 41.5W?

Prop each one--the portrait and the clock--in the space, take a photo, and we will weigh in. (You really could use some real art with some color, though.)

What are your thoughts on the black and white portrait going on fireplace, keeping 4 canvas prints next to TV (in its original place) and then me getting the oversized large colorful print above couch which my room is calling for? would that be too many "pictures" for one space. Then I could decide if I needed anything in kitchen area and beside couch from there
  • 9 years ago

I like your last idea best. Kid's portraits by the TV, family portrait over the fireplace, big art over the couch. That's the ticket.

I''m relieved to have a direction now...... Can someone suggest a canvas wall art that has my granite colors (See attached photo) with a "splash" of color. there is a lot on Wayfair that I'm looking into. I'll post some pics and see what everyone's thoughts are. TIA

this pic not my favorite....still too dark and too Brown, I prefer more lighter colors in my granite, but have to take into consideration wall art is over Brown leather couch and my style is mostly traditional, so a super modern/contemporary piece might not work well.

I have my eye on this canvas wall art, but it's 60"Wx 37"H think it may be too big. Height from ceiling to top of my sectional 60"
I like this piece, think it's a good start for me to "sprinkle" a little more color in my space maybe with lamp, and pillows and a few accessories. what are your thoughts please???
    sorry, here's the pic

How long is the leg of your sofa? This piece is definitely not too big; in fact, it may be a bit too small.

the height from ceiling to top.of sectional is 60" and the length of sectional against wall is 11'10" (142")
You need to tone it all down and do things that will bring it together since it's such an open space. The place is a giant mish mash. Hire a designer.

Facentet, in my last rendering of the art, I gauged the size by the 60" height measure you gave me, so it's probably fairly close to accurate in proportion. However, generally we look for art to cover 2/3 - 3/4 the length of the sofa which means your art should cover 94" - 108". This is why, in my first rendering, I used three large canvases.

Here is an example that successfully breaks the rule by going bigger on the art. You absolutely cannot get away with going too small on the art. It looks pathetic.

    thank you groveraxle. I don't think the canvas I chose will work then. The dimensions don't work. For the one panel they have 60 x 37 or 72 x 44. In a 3 panel version they offer 3 - 20 x 37 OR 3 - 24 x 44 OR 3 - 30 x 55. I will see what else I can find!

facentet - while that might not be large enough, I think it is a nice color combo so you are on the right track. Art is very hard to find so it just takes time. Let it evolve!

    this approx 44"H x 72"W
I can't image anything bigger needed.

This is exactly the size you mocked up with the tape. The only difference is I lowered it to about 6" above the sofa. You could go bigger, but this will work:

UPDATE....So I know I didn't take the "color" route, sorry just not my thing...but I am pleased with the larger art over my sectional. So I would like recommendations on side table and lamp. Maybe floor lamp or wall sconces would look better?? TIA

BTW, I will be replacing round clock in kitchen eventually also

Katinparadise, the arm height of the sectional is 32" H
