Just a hint for mealy bug!

In the far past, I have had experience with minor mealy infestation on an african violet. My go to response is the alcohol/cotton swab/cotton ball routine.

Which brings me to today. I found 3 little tiny mealies on my new strep from the greenhouse. The strep, like most strep has very textured, rough leaves. African violets usually have very hairy leaves. My alcohol worked just fine, but it is the darn cotton ball I had issue with.

Then it dawned on me. I got a paintbrush! Not an expensive one,,,,,just a cheap one. Worked so much better. I really got frustrated picking cotton fiber off the plants! This is much better! Rosie

Rosie - isolate this darn thing. Foliar meales put eggs everywhere. You need to do something else - not only alcohol. Some systemic - at least imidacloprid in a soil. Streps have such wonderful nooks and crannies for the pests to hide... Even submerging will not kill all of them.

i absolutely detest those nasty little buggers..i have issues with them on my succulents..which is nice i just douse them with alcohol/water mixture..i dont think i can do that with my av's

nice trick though..i'll have to keep that in mind. I use a paintbrush to clean the leaves

She has been isolated since coming here. I don't anticipate any problems, As usual I will go over it every day until I am MORE than sure it is gone. Thanks! Rosie

Aha - and month later you will find the new batch from a sleeping egg clutch. Adults can fly... and if you have Hoya - they will pack their suitcases and fly from FL - which is covered with foliar mealies outside.
