Clemson offers paper bags for peaches. I bet you that those bags work just as well for pears. You can google Clemson peach bags and order from them from the university site.

Squirrels seem to go by smell and sight. So your hidden peaches smell nice in bags, they are likely to take the lunch bags you prepare for them.

Birds, on the other hand, tend to peck on fruit that start to turn red so cover fruit with bags, birds cannot see. Squirrels win, anyway.

Just to update - I did bag 6 pears (regular lunch type paper bags) and the squirrels ignored them, just picked them today and they look perfect. Due to an early bloom and late cold snap there were few pears to begin with. Will bag up more next year if they set fruit ok.

I am experimenting with mesh bags on a variety of fruit and vegetables to protect them from rodent pests. I haven't bagged my citrus yet, because I'm planning to apply horticultural oil this weekend.

The cheapest option I found on Amazon were party favor bags. They certainly make the plants look festive! I'll report back on the effectiveness.

So far the strawberries are well protected from nibbles, though little black ants are getting stuck in the drawstring gathers and congregating inside.

These bags have the advantage of being very quick and easy to attach.
