We've lived here for 10 years and have tried different variations of this room. It is an open area off the kitchen and has an alcove with a fireplace next to it on the same wall. I like areas balanced and each time I walk in the room, I cringe!!

Okaaaaaaay. First, a big thank you to everyone who has postes your comments. I really appreciate it so much - and keep'em coming..... I hit a yard sale today and bought a couple things. I am selling the TV/hutch because I bought another one. I tried the red mirror and yhe clock over the FP but they were to large for the wall. What do you think about the FP now??? Also, I hung the outdoor pic along the large wall. Everything is still in process....

Nice! I like the new art for the fireplace, but the vase is too tall. I would make sure whatever you pick to go there should be shorter than the art and grouped in an overlapping cluster of three (maybe only on one side?)

Here is the different TV stand. Opinions??? I like it much better than my other TV stand. Selling it for $500 - anyone interested?

    Better??

I like the clock there, but not the art.

Your new TV console looks nice although I liked the first one also. Keep accessories simple on the console. Don't over clutter with small items that can only be see up close anyway. Should you sometime want to try, you might angle the console andTV rather than against the wall. Not a lot only slightly depending upon viewing from your sofa and chairs.
You're doing great with small changes.

Nice tv stand. It does the fp good.

I brought up the rug that was in the basement and removed some items. I will angle the TV stand a little, I just didn't have time this AM.

I like everything you have but you just have too much stuff in such a small space. My first thought was to do a "built in" tv cabinet and new fireplace mantle/surround, so it would all look like one piece. Now with your new stand, I think you should mount your tv on the wall so it's a little higher and balances the fireplace a little better and doesn't sit in/as a low dark shadow. You can put pictures/small art on the stand below the tv.

I also think it could work if you put your tv and stand on your long wall, put a chair in the alcove and your sofa under the window. The other chair to the right of the couch (kitchen side) if there is room, or where the couch is now if there is not? Or to another room? How many people watch tv at once?

mrykbee: I have had the TV on the long wall but the windows reflect too much light. Also, I like the sofa where it is because you can see the TV, fireplace, and out the windows. Thanks for your input.

Nice effort since I've been away. You could either have the FP stained to match the new TV credenza, or have the credenza lightened to match the FP. That would give the built-in effect if you like. I prefer the art above the mantel, but remove the dead twigs. Big battery operated clocks are a decor cop-out, IMO. If you don't have any other way to tell time... maybe! I wouldn't angle any more furniture, especially the TV credenza. That tends to say "I don't have room for any of my furniture in this room" and the corner FP is fixed that way already, IMO.

decoenthudiast: Thanks for your input. I'm thinking about painting the darker wall the lighter color. along with the fireplace wall. Do you think that will make a difference? I do like the idea of staining the fireplace to match the TV console.

    decoenthudiast: What is IMO?

decoenthusiast: sorry for the misspelling of your name.

Put chair & sofa to switch spots.

IMO = in my opinion. Painting the walls lighter will be an improvement, IMO. They seem a bit muddy to me. A light sage green would look good with the oak and with the color of your seating.

    which one?
IMO (haha) I like the picture centered. Does it clash w/other art in the room?

I really like the new art with trees it is longer. Not the mirror. It can go in entry or hallway. or bedroom, inside (behind) closet door if need. Put love seat under the tree art.

I really like your changes. A new wall color will be great!

I like your painting of the fox hunt. It incorporates your decorating colors. Try it over mantel. And add your candlesticks. The furniture that looks best is the couch parallel to tv.

I recently helped a friend with her living room and all the art was English style and hunt oriented. I think you can pull off that look in your room too. I get the impression you'd be happy with something traditional and cozy.

decoenthusiasts: I agree that I like traditional or even transitional. The photos you posted seemed to be a little cluttered and heavy for my taste. You did a very nice job on decorating.

Those are not my projects - I just found them on Houzz. I agree they're too busy, but for the atmosphere with your hunt picture, I think you can see how to get a bit more cozy. Sage green walls, red seating, hunting scenes and a few brass for accents would look great with the oak you have in your room. The English tend toward heavy and dark sometimes, but the hunt theme could be done with a lighter touch to great effect.

Here are the Hunt pics; a pair of gold and glass sconces and a brass bowl. is this what you had in mind. how should I hang the pics?
should I use these candle holders on the mantle?

Sorry if I missed it but can you put the 2 chairs on this wall and leave the sofa facing the tv?

    yes u can.

I like your pix and brass. The glass candlesticks don't have the presence to cope with the oak mantel; they just fade away into the wall color. Best to use them on the dining table. Try the hunt pix side by side, one frame's width apart and 5" above the mantel. Then use the sconces either side of them. That will accomplish "the look" and give your the symmetry you love.

    This is the latest.....

The fp is nice. Is a couch going under the first pic's art? Otherwise put table under it.

The deep red seems nice with art - has a mat its color it seems. No reason that your square art couldn't go over mantel, but keep that little area transitional [as suggested, not clear crystal fancy] as you had it... was it brown candles, etc....

I like how the art softly repeated rectangles designed in the wood mantel..

everdebz: I never noticed the art matching the rectangles in the fp. Good eye! Thanks for your input also. Please keep it coming.

Much better. I think you're getting the hang of it.

U r working so hard so I hate saying this but I think the hunt pic is too small. I like all other stuff on mantel. Good job!
I'm pooped. Please give input. Let me give you some info. If I move the TV to the wall w/windows, I have to run the cable along the floor by the FP. If I leave the sofa on the wall where Geo is, the people sitting on the sofa cannot see tv. I cannot move the TV to the sofa wall (where Geo is, we cannot see tv during the day due to glare. Please just shoot me now! Oh, and the smaller red chair is a recliner and needs an outlet to plug it in because of its fancy-schmancy lever. So... This what I have now. I absolutely hate this room and have hated it for 10 years now!
I think I will move the sofa on the window wall. The table on George's wall and the chairs on each end of the table and take pics. I would really like this to be finalized. A big thank you to everyone who has commented on this room. It's been a nightmare from day one.

I like George and the red chairs for a theme. Just add some blue for an all American space. I hate to see TV in front of windows. Have you considered using a blackout drape at that window so you can put TV opposite and close the drape when watching in the daytime? It can pull back and frame the window at other times. Think of your shutters as normal shades and do drapes with them to solve your glare issue.

decoenthusist: I want that room. It also looks narrow just like my room. I'm about finished and would like your opinion with the final results. Thanks.
Most people seem to like having the sofa facing the fireplace.
If this were my house, I would remove everything but the red leather pieces, and then try moving them around into different configurations. Try the sofa facing the fireplace from further across the room, and then add the red chairs on either side of the sofa. If you give us a drawing of the room (to-scale on graph paper), with furniture measurements, too, we can give better suggestions.
Here is the finished product. I'm pretty darn hap-happy with it. A big improvement from the beginning pics.
felizlady: Thanks for your input but I have had the sofa everywhere. This config is really the best there is for this room. This is the FIRST time I can say I am truly delighted with this layout.

You're going along...! I like your George art, and have seen his Valley Forge encampment area - what a hero he was.

Good for you. Relax and enjoy this weekend in your "new" space!

Wow u finally did it& a great job!

happyleg: Thanks. First time since living here I feel that room is complete. My husband doesn't believe me when I say I'm not going to move the furniture around. He HATES it when I move things around but he'll get over it.
