Rug recommendations

I'm working on designing the living room of my soon-to-be new house and decided this weekend, after vacuuming up the fuzz shed by my current area rug for the 9th time in three days, that I'm going to spend the money on a better quality rug instead of the "this will do" clearance section rugs I've bought over the years.

I'm sure price doesn't necessarily equal high quality, so I'm looking for recommendations. We've decided on a gray/yellow/?? color palette.

This site has taught me I'm buying too small, so I probably need a 9x13 or 10x14. I have an almost-crawling baby, so it needs to have a good thickness and softness. It needs to not shed so much that I have to run the sweeper every single day despite being in the main living area. And I need to not get laughed at for the price--would I be able to find something under $500?

What brands should I be looking at?

I don't know what my current rug is made of, but the devil himself invented it. I paid next to nothing for a 5x8 and it was a huge mistake.

The third one I posted is my favorite, actually. I do like lots of pattern and color (I tend to be drawn towards bohemian and eclectic things), but I'm trying to put together a cohesive room that doesn't overwhelm my fiance (who thinks striped shirts are too busy). The sofa we've picked is a neutral charcoal color. The yellow is being drawn from the kitchen walls that you can see from the living space, then I'll add pillows and accessories. My mental plan is to bring pattern into the living room rug, do a plainer rug under the dining table (L shaped dining/living, I have pictures on another post) and plainer window coverings for the large window in the living room and the patio doors in the dining room. Find a glorious piece of art in the colors of the rug, which "fit" me.

For plainer, I love this from C&B but a little too rich for my blood (although maybe it's laughable that I can find something of good quality in that size for what I'm looking to spend?)

I prefer the 3rd one pictured. Depending on your furnishings, I wouldn't go too graphic and bright with the rug unless the room layout and furniture/your personal style supports it.

As a note, I bought a midrange rug from Pottery Barn last year. It's wool, and it shed like crazy for the first few months. The rug's natural fibers create long strands of material that are difficult to weave, and stray fibers work their way loose and shed after people walk on it. It's much better after a few months though.

I'd stay away from wool if you hate the shedding.

Wool is my fabric of choice. It naturally repels dirt and is a tough fabric. I have never had problems with it shedding personally. A good place to start is www.rugsusa.com

Wool is also what I buy, but you have many levels of quality, some not so great. I have several wool Karastan rugs bought over the years, and the most recent was from eBay! Lower quality 'hand-tufted' wool rugs will shed as you describe above.

The 3rd one down above is polyester/synthetic, and wouldn't shed, but it's only 1/4" thick. You might be able to put a good pad under it and have it work for you.

Do you have a picture of the sofa? The 3rd rug is nice, but I don't think you'll get enoght contrast with the sofa. Too much grey. I don't think your husband could handle 1 and 4. Not sure about charcoal with the last rug. My monitor shores brown and taupe in the design. If your charcoal has too much blue in it, it might not work.

I'm a touch colorblind and have trouble seeing undertones, but I don't see this one pulling blue? I had initially posted something like this and I definitely see the blue here.

I think he'd be ok with 1 or 2...4, I'd get the side eye, but if that was the only "loud" thing in the room, I think we'd be ok. I put up with his bobblehead collection in my bedroom, after all.

This is so lovely, but $2k.
