Feedback on this room?

Hi, I am new here! But

so glad I found a pretty active decor loving group! We just got this blue couch from a sweet older couple who was selling it on a local Facebook group. It's originally from Havertys and they gave it to us for $150 which I think is a steal lol. Anyway, I absolutely love the look but I do realize that blue is not the traditional color of a couch. Am I crazy for loving the way this looks? Any feedback on the room would be helpfuk! (Keep in mind this the home of a small young family with two kids and a tight budget, so it's not all that lol)

Welcome! It would be great if you could post a few more pics of the room, from different angles. Is there a TV in the room? Fireplace? We need to see more to make suggestions.

No tv or fireplace:). This is pretty much the rest of the room I plan to keep at least. I have a wing back recliner from Goodwill that is right behind from where I took this picture but the print is horrendous and I won't be keeping for long. It is just there for hospitality purposes lol.

Also I have two throw pillow inserts for the loveseat just waiting for the covers I order to be delivered

What is "not traditional" about a blue sofa? It's a nice color and goes well with the other things in your room.

The pictures are all hung WAY too high and I don't get the purpose of that shelf It looks very awkward. Take it down.

Anglophilia I hate that shelf too but we actually have it for a projector set up. Our projector and DVD player sit on it and we play movies and such from it. Eventually we will get a bigger projector and mount it to the ceiling instead but until we can afford that, we will need to stick with this. You make do with what you got right lol.

I always thought wall stuff was suppose to be hung high to make ceilings look taller? Oops..

why you think blue is not traditional color for the couch?

    it's pretty traditional..and just pretty:)

(In my life I bought four couches-off white(many years ago so not with us anymore), brick red, aubergine, and pink..))

you're not crazy at all for loving it

I'd group your art on the walls some more, (let's say I'd put pieces next to the mirror with the group of prints that are displayed on the wall next to it)..I'd lower the mirror unless it's a big trouble to do so..or-cheat idea lol-can you put your "hello" lower? than it'd bring the mirror down. I'm not a fan of typography myself. but if you love it-maybe try to see how it looks like down there, closer to the couch?

and tie this pretty blue with the rest by bringing more of it into the room, for example adding a throw pillow or two on the gray couch that has a pattern containing pale blue

do you have a possibility to change your torchiere shade for a bigger, possibly more textured one? say fabric?

I think you like casual and cozy(am I right?)..you can add different textures including fabrics, wood, woven grass, plants, you name it, to your heart's content. your colors being pale and soft and calm-you can stay within the same pallette but make it even calmer and cozier with textures.

shouldn't be expensive..usually you put in more time when saving on money, but get a very cool place in return. if you have several lucky finds like this sofa..imagine how cool it'd be? one just needs to look for them

Here is why I think you are posting: I really like the blue sofa as pictured in the first picture.

How it doesn't work for me is with your gray sofa. The style and the color of it.

Not a deal breaker. But for me, my smile turned a bit into a frown seeing it next to the gray sofa.

Agree that the wall decorations need to be lowered.

I see the gray stripe throw. I would do the opposite and find a throw in a blue/gray multi and put it on the gray sofa.

"I always thought wall stuff was suppose to be hung high to make ceilings look taller?"-no:) curtains are supposed to be hung in a way so the ceilings will seem taller..but also shouldn't be overdone if you ask me

other stuff-conventional wisdom is that the center of composition is approximate optimal height for a viewer ..eye level..that was calculated at 5 feet 6 inches, give or take

now when you put art over the furniture though, this rule changes accordingly to the furniture since now it should relate to the piece it's hung over..because your composition now is not only the art but the furniture too.

you also usually appreciate it when you sit..unlike pieces that are hung on the walls which you can come close and look at the details when standing.

This is the pillow cover I ordered for the pillow inserts that will go on the loveseat. Hoping it ties in with the blue couch lol. And yeah, that dark gray isn't ideal but I think I'll keep working with it until I can afford to buy one that fits better. Until then, ill fill it with throw pillows lol.

Arpilneverends what is a torchier shade? Lol

the floor lamp:) torchiere is how I'm used to call them..not a native speaker..I think it's French for a floor lamp, and we had lots of French originated words for house things. (and wardrobe too I guess)

Arpilneverends Oh! Lol yes I would like to change that as well. Tight budget issues again lol. We mainly purchased this lamp because we needed more lighting in the room and this one was only $7 at Target . Eventually I would love one with fabric shade and woodwork. Eventually.. lol

I have always understood a torchiere to be a floor lamp that casts light upward toward the ceiling; they work by bouncing light off the ceiling so you need to take your ceiling height and color into consideration.

I love the sofa and think it looks great with your wall color and rug. It sounds like you've already taken steps to tie in the gray sofa by adding blue pillows. I agree the art is too high, and if it were my room I'd be looking for another larger piece of art (thrift stores or Craig's list can be good budget sources).

Could you paint the projector shelf, maybe to match the wall color or the mirror frame? The color is standing out from the rest of the decor, and not in a good way.

Here's an idea how to transform you torchiere into lamp w/shade

If it's a Halogen bulb fixture,,,, don't attempt

    http://sillypearl.com/2013/09/transform-torchiere-lamp-to-drum-shade.html

ETA - To beef up the lamp stem you could wind thick rope around it, That look would go w/coffee table too.

    Look at this transformation.

Wow! That looks so much better! Thanks so much!

Yes, lower all the art work..and can you paint the shelf that your projector sits on.....like the same color as your walls so that it doesn't stand out?
