what does the rest of the plant look like ... if its fine.. what problem do you want to solve ???

i read that hubby dog some digging ... but i would be very hesitant.. to try to fix anything on this very old plant ....

the collar of brown stuff .. under the new roots .. indicates to me.. that this has been happening over the years ..

try not to kill it .. with too much love ...

It used to be huge, but I pruned it way back. For some reason he took it upon himself to prune the bottom of it and it was bare to the knees. It was beautifully dense to the ground. It was trying to grow back but it was too shaded. In pruning it I wanted to expose the lower branches to more sun and bring it back down in size. I'll compost and mulch it and leave it alone.

Can you tell if it is grafted or not from that photo? If it is I can plant any cuttings that root in the ground, if it is grafted I will need to keep them in pots.
