AV vendor on Ebay

Since nearly all of us purchase AV's off the net from time to time, I thought I would note here that I had a very satisfactory experience from an Ebay seller calling themselves "EZY101".

I had been wanting to pick up an AV named "The King". Since shipping is so expensive, when I found one I went ahead and put a Ness "Viking Maiden" and an "Arapahoe" on the order. The prices were realistic, and w combined shipping, I felt good about the purchase.

A few days later, they arrived in the mail, nicely packaged, in good condition and w an extra passenger in the box. I had been gifted a "8E Helen Magnus 2". Never heard of it before but I looked it up and it seems as though it will fit nicely into the flock.

While things and people on the internet are not always what they seem, this vendor sold me nice plants at a reasonable price, not to mention a generous gift! Just in case any of you are considering purchasing another African Violet anytime soon!

Yes, we knew that Jeff. You're not the first person to buy from her (lol).

    Stinkpots, all of you!

can i say i didnt know..i searched and it said nothing was in the shop

Ha! It doesn't matter. The whole thing was pretty funny!

Did you send her some interesting questions on Ebay? how did she answer...inquiring minds want to know.

If her is me... I have 67 plants right now posted. And - yes - people always ask questions about culture. Sometimes about finding the like minded people in the area. Jeff - you can email AVSA - and ask if they have some-non affiliated members in the area. I bet they do.

Bev Promesberger is somewhere on FL panhandle. I remember her driving 7 hours to Sarasota bringing plants to die for to the Show at the Gesneriad Conference in 2010. I do not know how active she is - she is older now - but she is an AV hybridizer - and remembering her plants - she is a top notch grower, no doubt about it.

Yes, just trying to stir up some gossip about you on Ebay, Irina :0 All in fun.

I looked at hazel2eyes ebay posts - and couldn't stop myself - bid on 3... like I need more...

    that's our 1beautylover2012

I went to hazel2eyes on eBay too after you mentioned her. She has a couple of plants that Id like to have. Cant bid now though. I won't be here to take delivery.

When I get back though, I will have to revisit her collection.

Heck, I'll have my own collection of new plants when I get back. Since I had to debud all my plants prior to thrip wars, I have 7 or 8 that I have never seen flower. Hopefully they will all be ready to go into overdrive now that thrip spraying is done.

hazel2eyes has some interesting eye candies. Unfortunately I got into an argument over a transaction with her. So now I no longer buy from her. Her plants are tiny but healthy. Thinking back, it's all caused by my distrusting of ebay sellers. Now after several transactions from other sellers, I know they are all nice. They really try to make the buyers happy.

I bought from hazel2eyes - and again - you get even a small - but healthy and well shaped plant - it will double in size in no time... while I got some very stressed plants from ebay - and it took 6 months for them to recover.

Jeff - most of the buyers will hold plants for you for couple of weeks if you email them. You like the plant - and the price is right- sometimes a couple of stubborn people go into the bidding war - take it - the reason - in April-May - you know there will be more. In August - it can be easily the last starter of the season.

Regarding non-blooming plants. Either repot them in a fresh soil - or - leach them - little bit of fish emulsion in distilled water - and run it through the pot - it will give a plant a much needed kick.

Good info Irina. I read somewhere in a archive post of yours where you normally repot upon receiving a new plant. Then I read several other sources who all do the same thing. I started repotting new plants not long after. It has not been a problem. I use fish product for plant food so I always moisten my new potting soil w a watered down mixture of water and fish. (Sometimes those pesky fish won't stay in the pot!)

Haha! Oh Irina,,,we would never shun or ban you! You are a valuable member of this forum.

But I did get a kick out of this thread! GOTCHA JEFF !!!!!! Rosie

Thank you, Irina! You are one of returning buyers with no problems.

Yes, I do not sell big plants (just sometimes I do), but they are NOT tiny. At least I post the picture of the plant for sale (or similar) with ruler. It's better for plants to adjust to the new environments. I bought myself big plants a few times and they just stop growing for a few months (!), then start growing again and the leaves that was on the plant I have to remove because they look like not alive. You can read my feedbacks. My buyers are happy - that's what is important.

Jeff, I am always willing to hold on shipping and keep plants for my buyer if he is going on the trip or you want to see the next week listing. Do this all the time, just let me now and no problem.

Good to know. I have bought lots of "tiny" plants. They just didn't stay that way! With that in mind, I'll give em another look.

I meant to ask, are you saying that you can provide me a list of plants that will be coming up for sale next week? I looked on fleabay a few minutes ago and did not see any plants currently for sale by you. At any rate, I will definitely keep an eye out for your AV's.

Jeff - 67 plants out now - finishing Sunday.

    Here is AN-Rio-Rita - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Russian-African-Violet-An-Rio-Rita-in-bloom-/182686021722?hash=item2a88ef785a:g:XzwAAOSwRMtZaWKf

Look at this one - and press at the button - See Other items.

You can save the seller - under Sellers You Follow.

EBay software is not very transparent... politely saying.

I have had Huge Blessings buying from ETSY.com. I don't worry so much anymore.

You're SO evil Irina, looking on ebay now.

    Update: I resisted...bless me.

We need to be selective... only buy something you realy really want- and enjoy the rest as an eye candy.

Are most of the plants that you listed able to be raised right next to AV's? If I can raise them w the same light, food and water, I would try a couple. I am interested in those really handsome little episcia w the orange and yellow flowers.

    last modified: 9 years ago

Personally, I find episcias to be PITA, they don't appreciate winter time in windows. I love streps and and what used to be chiritas, achimenes and kohleria aren't bad either. Love Sinningias too, esp minis. But that's just me and my conditions.

Yup - you are correct - Episcias do not appreciate cold, they a croak on windowsills in winter - light stand is a place for them.. But not in FL. I think Jeff can episcize his windows and light stands, lanai, patio and a pool house - whatever them Floridians have.

Yes - whatever I grow - is grown with AVs

Great. No, the big problem in Florida is how not to "cook" your plants. Outside plants have to be in the shade. I have had some luck at propagating dead sticks outside. Seems to be more of them every time I look.

thank you irina that was very helpful for me seeing what you had available

Irina, I look at your plants all the time now that I know who's they are! Right now, I see several that I like but nothing that really blows my skirt up. When do you normally post new plants? At any rate, you can bet you'll be sending a few more plants to Florida!

jeff..learned something new about you...careful of what you wear under that skirt..

I should have said kilt instead of skirt.

Jeff, I guess you checked my sales? OK, my auctions start every Saturday at 7 PM my time (Columbus, OH). So, it's tomorrow. Hope you will find something you like.

Yes, I checked your previous sales. I did not know that was you but I have been looking at your plants for quite a while. Very nice. I will look again today to see whats new. Thanks for sharing this information. Like Irina, you too will be shipping AV's to Florida soon!

    Sure, Jeff, I will!

    Jeff,

There are a number of us here who sell on EBay so be careful what you post!!

Here's a tip for buying on-line: if the seller is new to you, don't buy a lot of plants. Buy a few and see how it turns out. Are they shipped carefully? Are they insect and disease free? Does the seller work with you if there's a problem? Do they grow well? (And remember, some varieties just do not like you and your conditions and will refuse to grow. Usually, these will be the ones that you have coveted for years and FINALLY now have one. They seem to know somehow and have no qualms about dying and breaking our plant nerdy hearts. We've all been there.) If you are happy with the seller and the plants then it is safe to indulge yourself with their offerings.

I have bought from two of the sellers on this thread and been happy with both. I bought a Chimera from EZY101 and she included a variety that I had been lusting after for quite some time. How she knew, I'm not sure. I guess she must read through all of these violets threads! Both of those plants are now happily growing under the lights in my plant room.

And Jeff, just to rub it in a bit more, EZY101 is an African Violet judge, I believe, as am I!

In regards to receiving small plants from Ebay, younger plants are desirable as they adapt to different growing conditions much more easily than do older plants. Also, smaller plants are much easier and less costly to ship than larger ones. I always choose smaller plants when buying anything in person whether it's for the house or the yard. They just adapt better.

And may I just say it was a pleasant surprise this morning to log in and see posts from Whitelacey once again here on GW. Welcome back and nice to see you, Linda!

Linda, thank you!!! You are sooooo right about smaller plant - they ARE adjusting to the new environment easier and of course, it's easier for them to travel. And, BTW, you are my buyer too :-)

    Jeff,

Just be careful about buying Chimera plants from ebay. My Psychedelic Show just opened today. It's an expensive dud.

Someone mentioned here that if you bought from a reputable vendor (or I think from someone on this board), then you can contact them to get replaced or refunded. Lesson learned.

Yeah, I'd only buy a chimera if the seller said he had previously bloomed it and it was true.

Julie.. That is if they respond back

    last modified: 9 years ago

If they don't then you may have to say, 'I have chosen poorly'. I've always had excellent luck with almost any plant lover/vendor, including Ebay.

(this may seem superfluous, but I have a point).

A few years ago, I noticed a package of native plants from a reputable company I had done business with for years had shipped, and I was able to verify my credit card hadn't been charged. In fact, I received my package before the card was charged. I contacted the vendor, to make sure they hadn't simply forgotten (I'm honest), and they said it was just so busy that hadn't had a chance yet, but knew I was wanting the plants, so sent them on. They said they had also never had a problem with customers trying to defraud them, sincere plant people tend to be honest people. This was sorta awe-inspiring to me, in this day and age.

AnneCecilia-thanks for the welcome! I've been here off and on but mostly just lurking. My daughter and I starting making soap and it's kept me busy. We've started to sell some because we have enough soap to last us for years! Beautylover, I have my eye on a couple of your auctions-just waiting until the last minute to bid! Dbarron, interesting story-I was once told by a store owner that people always pay for their interests and hobbies; it's the necessities-utilities, car payments-that they try to get out of if they're of that mind. I think that's probably true.

Hi Linda,,,welcome out of "lurkdom"!!!! I remember you, glad you are back. Wow if that is soap, it looks good enough to eat!!! Like multi-layered jello with whipped cream!!!! YUM! Rosie
